Translation of Die Geschlagenen. - An anti-Nazi German soldier becomes an American prisoner of war. - The son of a fisherman, Hans Werner Richter was born in 1908 at Bansin, on the Baltic. He was trained for the book business, but as a youth shipped out for a time as a sailor. When in 1927 he went to Berlin, he became a minor functionary of the German Communist party, from which he later withdrew to found an independent socialist movement. During the depression years he earned a meager living as street singer, chauffeur, and political speaker. After a year in exile in France, he returned to Germany, where after 1940 he was under continual observation by the Gestapo. Drafted into the army, he took part in the battle for Cassino, where he was captured by the Americans in 1944. While in prison camp in the United States he began his career as a writer and journalist. Released after two years, he returned to Germany and with Alfred Andersch edited and published the magazine Der Ruf in the US Zone. Because of the sharpness of its attacks on the occupation authorities, this publication was suspended a year later. Richter now lives in Munich, where he is a free-lance writer and journalist. BEYOND DEFEAT (Die Geschlagenen) is his first novel and was published in Germany in 1948. -- Not since All Quiet on the Western Front has there been such a moving story of what it was like to be a German soldier. Beyond Defeat recounts that experience in such a dramatic manner that it has been a tremendous success all over Europe. It is a mature book, full of tense atmosphere and colorful soldier language.
