Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Revised Edition. Shelfwear. 1 corner of wraps worn. ; Statues of the god Priapus stood in Roman gardens to warn potential thieves that the god would rape them if they attempted to steal from him. In this book, Richlin argues that the attitude of sexual aggressiveness in defense of a bounded area serves as a model for Roman satire from Lucilius to Juvenal. Using literary, anthropological, psychological, and feminist methodologies, she suggests that aggressive sexual humor reinforces aggressive behavior on both the individual and societal levels, and that Roman satire provides an insight into Roman culture. Including a substantial and provocative new introduction, this revised edition is important not only as an in-depth study of Roman sexual satire, but also as a commentary on the effects of all humor on society and its victims. ; 352 pages.

Softcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Light shelfwear. Gift inscription from author to ffep in black ink. ; The first large-scale application of feminist theory to the study of Greek and Roman cultures, this book points to some striking similarities between our culture and that of the ancient world, challenging Foucauldian assumptions about the nature of sexuality. Covering such topics as vase painting, tragic and comic drama from fifth-century Athens, Hellenistic philosophy and sex manuals, Roman history, poetry, wall-painting, representations of gladiatorial combat, and romance novels, the contributors approach sexuality from both sides of the feminist pornography debate, including the use of film theory. A path-breaking application of feminist theory to the study of Greek and Roman cultures, this text offers new insight into the notion of sexuality in the ancient world. ; 317 pages; Signed by Author.

"Still funny after two thousand years, the Roman playwright Plautus wrote around 200 B.C.E., a period when Rome was fighting neighbors on all fronts, including North Africa and the Near East. These three plays-originally written for a wartime audience of refugees, POWs, soldiers and veterans, exiles, immigrants, people newly enslaved in the wars, and citizens-tap into the mix of fear, loathing, and curiosity with which cultures, particularly Western and Eastern cultures, often view each other, always a productive source of comedy. These current, accessible, and accurate translations have replaced terms meaningful only to their original audience, such as references to Roman gods, with a hilarious, inspired sampling of American popular culture-from songs to movie stars to slang. Matching the original Latin line for line, this volume captures the full exuberance of Plautus's street language, bursting with puns, learned allusions, ethnic slurs, dirty jokes, and profanities, as it brings three rarely translated works-Weevil (Curculio), Iran Man (Persa), and Towelheads (Poenulus)-to a wide contemporary audience. Richlin's erudite introduction sets these plays within the context of the long history of East-West conflict and illuminates the role played by comedy and performance in imperialism and colonialism. She has also provided detailed and wide-ranging contextual introductions to the individual plays, as well as extensive notes, which, together with these superb and provocative translations, will bring Plautus alive for a new generation of readers and actors.".

In den WarenkorbZustand: Gut. 80 p. A perfect copy. - From the preface: Juvenal 6 is a monument of misogynistic satire and shows one of the greatest Roman satirists at his stylistic best. It is thus worth reading in Latin for the sake of both entertainment and astonishment; rarely has the hatred of women been so elegantly packaged. It also must be read, as must all of Juvenal, with courage in the face of difficult diction; for this reason, I have made the notes on the full side, but even if this full seems scanty to you, perseverehe does repeat his tricks. Very little is known about Juvenal himself other than what people deduce from his satires. The chief speaker in Satire 3 implies that the poet/narrator comes from the town of Aquinum, and an inscription has been found there dedicated by a luvenalis. The narrator of Satire 1 says that he is past middle age. From internal evidence, the poems were published in the early years of the second century A.D., in the reigns of Trajan and Hadrian. Satire 6 probably came out in 116 or 117; the last datable event in the poems comes from 127. Martial, a Spaniard who came to Rome in the late first century A.D. and had something of a success as an epigrammatist, may have been Juvenal's friend, for he addressed several poems to a luvenalis. No one else among Juvenal's contemporaries mentions him. We can assume that, like Tacitus' and Martial's, his early career lay in the shadow of the reign of Domitian. That he had rhetorical training is evident from the wicked faceting of his lines. Satire 15 suggests that Juvenal knew Egypt; ancient biographies, notoriously unreliable, say he was exiled there as a result of his satires on the actor Paris. The pose he assumes in his satires is that of a Roman of good family but limited means, forced to curry favor with wealthy freedmen of dubious morality and foreign blood.
