Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Frolic Wind' is a sophisticated and sharp-witted social satire set against the backdrop of Pagnell Bois, a grand English country estate. The story follows the four aging Jeune sisters-Cecily, Teresa, Mary, and Cordelia-as they host a weekend party for a group of eclectic guests. Beneath the surface of polite conversation and upper-class decorum, the novel explores the simmering tensions, hidden secrets, and psychological complexities of its inhabitants. As a heavy summer storm approaches, the rigid social structures of the past begin to fracture, revealing the vulnerabilities and hypocrisies of a fading aristocracy.Richard Oke employs a modernistic style that blends the traditional comedy of manners with a more provocative exploration of human desire and societal change. The work is celebrated for its elegant prose, biting irony, and vivid character studies. By capturing the transitional atmosphere of the interwar period, 'Frolic Wind' offers a compelling look at the clash between Victorian tradition and the burgeoning sensibilities of the early 20th century. It remains a notable example of British satirical literature, providing a timeless reflection on the masks people wear and the eventual, inevitable exposure of the truth. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work was reproduced from the original artifact, and remains as true to the original work as possible. Therefore, you may see the original copyright references, library stamps (as most of these works have been housed in our most important libraries around the world), and other notations in the work. This work is in the public domain in the United States of America, and possibly other nations. In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first impression. Provenance: from the publisher's archive of Victor Gollancz (1893-1967), one of the revolutionary figures of 20th-century publishing. Everything about Gollancz was distinctive, from his business practices - he flouted convention, backed newcomers extravagantly, and held unique sway over the Book Society choices - to the appearance of his books. The famous yellow jackets, a collaborative design between Gollancz himself and the typographer Stanley Morison, bristle with blurbs, recommendations, and reviews in black and magenta. Prior to its acquisition by Peter Harrington, the archive was shelved together from first publication, though occasionally moved from warehouse to warehouse over the decades. The copies were retained by Gollancz as "archive" or "file" copies and most are stamped in ink with rubber stamps, usually on the front panel of the dust jacket, the front free endpaper, and the title page. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine green. With the original dust jacket. Some spotting to endpapers, but elsewhere a clean and bright copy in the dust jacket with just a few small nicks to edges, and some small stains to both panels. An excellent copy.…
