Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - By turns savage, funny, and painfully honest, Sand in Strange Places is an unfiltered memoir of growing up in civil-strife-torn Northern Ireland during the late 1960s and early 1970s - a place defined by religious zealotry, small-town myopia, and country-and-western-fuelled alcoholism. It is also the story of one boy's escalating determination to lose his virginity and to get out.It recounts a childhood shaped by fear, repression, and contradiction: surviving a brutal boarding-school education, narrowly avoiding expulsion, and once facing the threat of having his testicles cut off by a British soldier. Richard gives a frank account of the physical and sexual abuse he endured at a supposedly elite, now long closed, preparatory school. As an only child, he also negotiates the hard love and relentless expectations of parents who regarded parenthood as an investment. His journey from short trousers to flannels charts his fall from academic prodigy to failure, accompanied by a bumpy sexual coming-of-age, a brief and capricious rock'n'roll career, and how he achieved a literary recognition shared by only two others: Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett.Despite all this, Richard retains a fierce affection for the country of his birth - but there's no way on God's green earth that he would ever go back to live there again.…

Zustand: Hervorragend. Zustand: Hervorragend | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | Percy Grainger, much like his contemporary Bela Bartok, was intensely interested in folk music and became a member of the English Folk-Song Society soon after his arrival in London in the first decade of the 20th century. He produced numerous works based upon folk music from the British isles, with more than 45 items in his "British Folk-Music Settings" alone. As with many titles in the series, Molly on the Shore exists in multiple arrangements - "dished-up" by the composer himself. The first version (BFMS 1), composed in 1907, was for string quartet, followed up with arrangements for violin and piano (1907) and orchestra (1914). The present band setting was done around 1920 and published as No.23. Grainger's 1920 score was a "compressed full score" which did not precisely notate each part in detail as a conventional full score does. The score offered here is a newly edited and engraved edition prepared by Richard W. Sargeant Jr. based upon both the original 1920 score and the actual band parts issued at the same time. Those interested in Grainger's unique orchestrational palette can now see in it full detail.…

Zustand: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Seiten: 410 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | "Let me tell you about my day so far. I'll begin by telling you about waking up in my Marbella villa to find a dead girl in my bed; about being interrogated by the Spanish police - or hombres purporting to be the Spanish police; about learning that I'm going to have my kneecaps shattered by the former Chief of Staff of the Provisional IRA. That is, if he can find me before the godfather of the Andalucian Russian mafia hunts me down. And not only that; it's not yet ten o'clock and I've taken up smoking and have drunk half a bottle of brandy before I've even had breakfast." Richie Malone is an old-school philanderer, misogynistic playboy and writer with an undeniable charm. Although he has yet to pen anything to attract literary acclaim using his own name, he has made a fortune writing pornographic novels under a female pseudonym. But now his troubles are just beginning. He needs answers, and he needs them fast. Just who is this dead girl? How did she get here? And why his bed? And, of course, did he kill her? Malone finds himself caught in the middle of a turf war between Irish racketeers, the Russian Mafia and a Columbian cartel. And so, he loses the plot. But can he get it back before he loses everything … including his life.…

Leather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. Two volumes from the 'Works of British Poets' set. Volumes fifty-nine and sixty-seven of the 'Works of British Poets', in uniform leather bindings. With four volumes in two, with two frontispiece per volume. Richard Polwhele was born in Truro Cornwall in 1760. As well as a poet, Polwhele was a clergyman and a historian of Cornwall and Devon. Tibullus was a latin poet, of which we know little about. Believed to have been born around the year 55 BC, there is some questioning by critics as to whether all of the work attributed to Tibullus are indeed by the poet. The works featured in this particular volume has been translated from the Latin into English by James Grainger. James Grainger was a Scottish born doctor, poet and translator. His is perhaps best known work is a poem called 'The Sugar Cane', a poem with anti-slavery sentiment. After a new edition was published in 2000, the poem has received much critical attention. Signed binding, reads 'J Taylor'. In uniform morocco leather binding, with gilt leaf detail. Externally smart. Both volumes have some slight rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Tidemark to the rear board of volume 67, to the tail. Small tidemark to volume 59, again to the rear board to the tail. Binders mark to the front pastedown of each volume to the head. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally clean, with some slight agetoning and the odd spot throughout. Very Good Indeed. Various (illustrator). book.…
