Originally published in 1696, "Apparatus biblicus" is a development of the author's "Introduction à la Lecture de l'Ecriture Sainte" (1689). In this work he calls in question the historical character of the Book of Tobias and the Book of Judith, and maintains that even after the Council of Trent a difference of authority should be recognized between the proto-canonical and deutero-canonical books of the Bible. This work examines also subjects such as the history of the Hebrews and the Holy Land, a description of the Tabernacle and Temple, a history of the scriptures, and a great many tangential matters like the plants, animals, minerals, diseases, and customs mentioned in the Bible. Illustrated with thirty striking copper plates (including frontispiece), with a folding map of the known world. This work is divided into three parts: 1) Of the Origin, History, and Antiquities of the Jews; 2) Of the Canon; 3) Of the False Gods, together with an Explanation of Scriptural Names. Many of the plates are folded, and some depict the following views: Map of the World; Noah's Ark; the Tower of Babel; Map of the Holy Land; Plan of the Ancient City of Jerusalem; the Ark of the Covenant; the Temple; the High Priest; the Great Sanhedrim; etc. Head and tail of spine chipped. Rubbing along edges of binding. Front hinge starting, but front board still firmly attached. Minor to moderate age-toning/foxing to very first and very last pages. Minor worming and water-staining to upper margin of the last hundred pages (not affecting text or plates). Binding in overall fair, interior in good+, plates in very good condition. Text in Latin. Binding with some wear, few small chips, slightly wavey, some staining and light scuffing at spine. Some parts of book with stains at top margins due to water exposure. Zustand: Very Good. Report dated May 14, 1925, issued to the Board of Trustees of the Combined Normal and Industrial Department of Wilberforce University by the Superintentant [Richard C. Bundy]. Tall folio, (9.25x14.5"). Original drab wraps with three small metal rivets along the left side, with small typed label, "Captain Thomas," on front cover, likely the recipient of this copy.14 numbered mimeographed pages, printed on rectos only. Very Good with wear to covers, uneven toning to the first sheet, light soiling and several instances of small pencil notations throughout.Though not mentioned by name, the Superintendent of the C.N.I. Department was Richard C. Bundy (1879-1932). Bundy came to Wilberforce in 1923 after serving as secretary to the American Legation in Liberia from 1909 to 1921. He remained at the school until his death, serving as dean of the college of education as well as the superintendent of the C.N.I. Department. Wilberforce University is one of three historically black universities established before the American Civil War.His report covers a variety of topics, including enrollment, facilities, constructions, budgets, personnel and graduates. It opens with the enrollment numbers in various divisions for the school year, tuition and fee increases. Among other subjects written about were the Theodore Mason case, an engineer who was "not reengaged by the board as a result of its action at the meeting of September 11th, 1924," has been reinstated and his replacement released. The report also informs on the ongoing and upcoming construction projects: the near-completion of a new dairy barn, a poultry barn, work on the home economics and laundry buildings, and planning for a Sewage Disposal plant. Efforts are made to enable the power plant to provide heat 24 hours a day in the cold months, instead of turning off at 10 pm as it does the rest of the year, plus a legislative appropriation to enable adding a railroad spur from Wilberforce station to the power plant to enable direct delivery of coal and other material. Finally, it list teachers and employees and salaries paid to each, and graduates for that year.
