"In this unusual story of a man's struggle against his life-long desire to escape reality, [the author] has written a brilliant novel which adds to the stature of his already distinguished reputation as a writer of uncommon versatility. Major Kenneth Creswell--he was soon to drop the ' Major'--differed from most of us only in degree. His War record was brilliant but so was that of many others; he had great charm of manner, but that again was not what made him, in a sense, a man apart. The difference lay in the fact that his dissatisfaction with himself was more profound, his need to escape more urgent. He was, perhaps, more of an idealist than most men, though society, had it stumbled upon his secret, might have said otherwise. So I guess this is a " psychological torment" novel.

(no dust jacket) [moderately worn copy, dust-soiling and age-toning to page edges, hinges a little weak but still fully intact, 1928 birthday gift inscription on half-title page; paper label on front cover is soiled but intact, but the corresponding spine label is a bit chipped, is peeling off a little at one corner, and has faded almost to the point of unreadability]. Novel about an English schoolboy, following him from early boyhood in India to later adolescence in England. According to a contemporary reviewer, the reader "is able to overlook the steady volley of English slang, the cut-and-driedness of English public school ideals and the occasional absurdity of English schoolboy hobbies," because the title character is so refreshing and likable. (His nickname derives from his liking for "the brown skin on top of rice pudding"; all very well and good for 1928, maybe, but can you imagine the torture a kid today would go through with a name like that?) The same reviewer, however, felt the book would "better serve the average American reader were it not so intensely English and Anglo-Indian," and also found it "rather startling that anyone who can create so delightful an atmosphere of boyhood as [the author] can, should also fill a book with so much rot about sportsmanship and the like.".
