A good, clean copy.First edition of this oration in which Riccoboni, on behalf of the faculties of philosophy and medicine at the University of Padua, congratulates Marco Corner on his election as Bishop of Padua.Antonio Riccoboni, known as Rodigino because he was originally from Rovigo, was a humanist, literary theorist, and prolific Aristotelian commentator. He was educated in Venice under Muretus and Sigonio. He was a professor of rhetoric at the University of Padua. In 1593, he published his Latin translation of Aristotle's Ethics. He was also a member of the important Accademia degli Animosi in Padua, of which he was one of the most ardent supporters. He became very famous in his day, so much so that Montaigne, passing through the region between 1580 and 1581, mentioned him with great praise when talking about Rovigo and Polesine in his Journal de voyage. In 4°(23,3x17,3 cm); (8), 148 pp. (errore di numerazione, come in tutti gli esemplari, da pagina 24 a 28 con inversione della sequenza dei numeri). Bella legatura coeva in piena pergamena molle con titolo abilmente ed elegantemente manoscritto da mano coeva al dorso. Dorso in parte staccato dal volume che si presenta però ben rilegato. Antica firma seicentesca alla prima carta bianca "Pencologia Moroni (?)" anticamente cancellata a china ma ancora ben leggibile. Antica firma di appartenenza dell'inizio del seicento al margine basso del frontespizio solo in parte comprensibile "Hora tio .". Bello stemma xilografico al frontespizio. Un leggerissimo alone, ininfluente, al margine esterno bianco delle prime tre carte. Un piccolo alone al margine esterno bianco delle ultime 8 carte, insignificante. Due forellini di tarlo al margine esterno bianco delle ultime due carte e nel complesso, esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Prima non comune edizione, di questa celebre storia dell'Università di Padova, scritta dal grande storico ed umanista, Antonio Riccoboni (Rovigo, 1541 Padova, 1599). L'opera ripercorre la storia dell'ateneo patavino dalla sua fondazione nel 1222 al 1598. Grande rilievo è dato agli anni compresi dal 1520 al 1598 con biografie dei professori principali come ad esempio, Andrea Vesalio. Ad esempio il quarto libro presenta alcune celebri diatribe scaturite all'interno dell'ateneo che videro coinvolti illustri personaggi su questioni di varia natura, come C. Sigonio, J. Zabarella, F. Piccolomini, G. Denores, G.B. Guarini, F. da Acquapendente e lo stesso Riccoboni. I libri quinto e sesto, infine, narrano episodi o eventi di cronaca legati alla storia dell'università, come le feste celebrat e nel ginnasio per la vittoria di Lepanto, la nascita dell'Accademia degli Animosi, l'inaugurazione del teatro anatomico, ecc. Nelle pagine 132 e 133 viene anche ricostruito il noto fatto di cronaca dell'assassinio della nobildonna e poetessa originaria di Gubbio, Vittoria Accoramboni nel 1585 che tanto scalpore fece all'epoca e che portò alla condanna a morte di Ludovico Orsini, parente del marito della Accoramboni, sospettato di esser stato il mandato dell'omicidio. Riccoboni, nato a Rovigo, dove per breve tempo fece anche parte del Collegio dei Notai allievo di Carlo Sigonio, Paolo Manuzio e Marc Antoine Muret, fu professore di eloquenza dell'Università di Padova per lungo tempo. Associato all'Accademia degli Addormentati insieme a Luigi Groto, Domenico Mazzarello e Giovanni Domenico Roncalli, era uno degli affiliati quando l'accademia venne soppressa per le simpatie eterodosse che vi venivano professate. Nel 1570, aggregato al Consiglio dei n obili rodigiani, fu una delle figure principali della rielaborazione degli statuti cittadini. Nel 1571 succedette a Giovanni Fasolo nella cattedra di retorica dell'ateneo padovano, su invito diretto di Lorenzo Massa, dopo che la stessa cattedra era stata rifiutata da Muret. Nel 1573 fa parte 1573 dell'Accademia degli Animosi, consesso fondato dall'abate Ascanio Martinengo, cui partecipano anche Sperone Speroni, Bernardino Tomitano e Francesco Piccolomini. "Durante il trentennio padovano adibì la sua casa a collegio, ospitandovi fino a dodici studenti (tra essi, nel 1594, Guido Bentivoglio), e lavorò alacremente alla traduzione e al commento di alcune opere aristoteliche". Autore prolifico, numerosi sono gli scritti di Riccoboni dedicati alla poetica, la retorica e l'eloquenza, oltre ad alcune valent i pubblicazioni dedicati alla storiografia. "Un'accesa controversia con Carlo Sigonio ebbe origine nel 1583, quando fu pubblicata a Venezia, priva di note editoriali e di commento, una Consolatio attribuita a Cicerone (M. Tullii Ciceronis Consolatio. Liber quo se ipsum de filiae morte consolatus est).
