Rui Ribeiro Couto (1898 - 1963) was a prominent Brazilian poet, short-story writer, novelist, journalist, magistrate, and diplomat. He was a leading figure in the early years of the Brazilian Modernist movement. Rui Ribeiro Couto's most important and beautiful connection to Hungary is the story of a lifesaving and literature-promoting friendship that bound him to Pál Rónai (Paulo Rónai), a Hungarian-born literary scholar, translator, and philologist. Ribeiro Couto actively helped Pál Rónai bring modern Brazilian literature to Hungarian readers. Even before the war, Pál Rónai became interested in Luso-Brazilian (Portuguese and Brazilian) literature and began corresponding with Ribeiro Couto, who was serving as a diplomat in Europe at the time (including in the Netherlands and Yugoslavia). When Rónai was sent to a forced labor camp during World War II due to anti-Jewish laws, Ribeiro Couto used his diplomatic connections and influence to intervene on his behalf. He managed to rescue Rónai: he obtained a Brazilian passport and visa for him, allowing the Hungarian scholar to leave Europe in 1941 and flee to Brazil.
