Whistler was killed in action two years after this piece was published.Undated, dated from a copy held by the British Library.Simon Harcourt Nowell-Smith's conceit of a grand Palladian mansion and its accompanying extravagances. An editor and librarian as well as a writer, Nowell-Smith allegedly wrote this text to amuse his wife during the Blitz. In original publisher's red cloth binding. With unclipped dust wrapper. Bookplate of Deborah Stuart to front paste down. Externally, smart with slight bumping, rubbing and faint marking most prevalent to the top of the front board. Externally, very smart with minor shelf wear to the extremities. Original unclipped dust wrapper is sound with light shelf wear and the odd small mark to the panels. Sunning to the spine. A 2" closed tear to the head of the front panel has been sympathetically repaired with tape to the internal side, with a 3" closed tear to the tail of the panel. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout with a contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper dated 1949. Very Good Indeed. book.
