It is the hope of the revisers that they have combined piety with discrimination in a way which enhances the great merit of this well-known book. John Duncan Mackie CBE MC (18871978) was a distinguished Scottish historian who wrote a one-volume history of Scotland and several works on early modern Scotland. He was Professor of Scottish History and Literature at the University of Glasgow from 1930 to 1957. In 1957 he retired, and was appointed Historiographer Royal for Scotland. Bruce P. Lenman is Emeritus Professor of Modern History at the University of St. Andrews and an Honorary Professor at the University of Dundee. Noel Geoffrey Parker FRHistS FBA (born 25 December 1943) is an English historian specializing in the history of Western Europe, Spain, and warfare during the early modern era. His best known book is The Military Revolution: Military Innovation and the Rise of the West, 15001800. He holds his BA, MA, Ph.D., and LittD degrees from Cambridge University. Parker has taught at the University of Illinois, the University of St Andrews, and Yale University. He is currently the Andreas Dorpalen Professor of History at the Ohio State University. "Comprehensive, thoroughly indexed, and full of learning."--The Times Educational Supplement. A history that is equally entertaining and enlightening, illustrating all of the changes of power and intricacies that are necessary to understand the interrelation between England and Scotland and the Highland and Lowland populations. It shows how Duncan (1034-40) emerged from 'the union of the four peoples' as the first king of a united Scotland and provides detailed, reign-by-reign accounts from then on. Above all Professor Mackie reveals how the Scots long pursued an independent line - in religion, law, culture and foreign policy - that helped them keep at bay the Romans, the French and the English. Second Edition [Revised]. Third printing [stated].

Eighth edition, revised and enlarged, published in 1953 by E. P. Dutton and Company, Inc., New York. Originally authored by Paul Goodman and revised with new material by Israel Cohen, with an introduction by Dr. Abba Hillel Silver. Publisher's original brown cloth hardcover binding with black blind-stamped lettering to the front board and spine. Pages are clean, bright, and unmarked throughout. A prior owner's stamp is present on the front free endpaper. Complete with the original dust jacket, unclipped, retaining the publisher's price of $3.50 on the front flap. A solid, honest copy of this mid-twentieth-century historical work. Collector's Note: History of the Jews remains a respected and accessible survey of Jewish history, and this 1953 revised and enlarged eighth edition reflects significant mid-century scholarship through Israel Cohen's updates and additions.
