Derby, and a folding facsimile of a hand-written letter by Rowland Hill, and one further plate. The additional engraved portrait plate is fully detached, but present, loosely inserted. Collated, complete. A substantial biography of the celebrated evangelical preacher Rowland Hill, published in the year following his death. With fifteen sermons preached during the eighty-ninth and final year of Hill"s life, including his last pulpit address and prayer for Sunday-school teachers, concluding with a funeral sermon by the Reverend W. Richards. Rowland Hill (1744-1833) was an English evangelical preacher renowned for his unconventional open-air ministry and ability to attract large crowds with his preaching. A detailed contemporary account of one of the most charismatic figures of the Evangelical Revival. In a contemporary half calf binding with marbled paper boards. Externally, worn. Rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in slight loss to calf. Rubbing to boards resulting in surface loss to paper. Hinges strained but holding; wear to endpapers at gutter. Slight worming to lower portion of front endpapers and rear paste down. Previous owner's contemporary ownership inscription and annotation to recto of first blank, dated 1839. Internally, firmly bound. Pages characteristically age toned with light scattered spotting to fore edge, heavier to first and last few leaves and prominent to frontispiece. Worming to lower portion of frontispiece. One or two pencil annotations to margins of first few leaves. Edge wear to the occasional leaf with one or two small chips, closed tears, and creases, not affecting the text. Very minor worming to lower fore edge from S8 onwards, not affecting the text.
