Presumed second edition. vii, 139, [ii], 436pp., frontispiece and 7 plates (including a list of Martyrs), and tail piece illustrations. The Bass Rock is an island in the outer part of the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland, situated approximately 1 mile offshore, and 3 miles north-east of North Berwick. The rock is uninhabited, but historically has been settled by an early Christian hermit, and the site of an important castle, which after the Commonwealth period was used as a prison. The island belongs to Sir Hew Hamilton-Dalrymple, whose family acquired it in 1706, and before to the Lauder family for almost six centuries. This book is a study of the Bass Rock, written by four respected authors. It starts with a History of the Bass by Thomas M'Crie (1797-1875), a Presbyterian minister and church historian; this is followed by an account of the Geology of the Bass by Hugh Miller (1802-1856), the famous Scottish geologist and writer; there is then a fascinating section on the Martyrs of the Bass (historical notices of 39 prisoners confined on the Bass) by James Anderson. The book closes with notices of the natural history of the rock - zoology by Professor John Fleming and botany by Professor John H. Balfour. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and a blind stamped illustration of the Bass Rock on both boards. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling to the boards and bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with some scattered but mostly light foxing, including some marks on the frontispiece and title-page. The plate facing page 409 and a few pages near the start and end of the book are moderately affected. There is a personal name stamp on the front free endpaper. At the time of listing there is some Bass related ephemera loosely inserted at the front of the book. …

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Lot of 40 titles from the Arno / New York Times Series The American Negro, His History and his literature. HEAVY Package - pickup can be arranged at our public storefront in downtown Manhattan. All told, the volumes are clean and well kept. From the home of a well regarded historian of Black studies. Also was a tobacco smoker, and that combined with age has led to occasional toning / darkening of the tan cloth part of these hardcover volumes - though without any consistency, it is present to some degree on nearly all. Faint odor as well, especially for those of sensitive nose, though to this seller it is not egregious. Besides that, the condition is pretty solid on all. Binding are all quite strong, sturdy, tight , square. No markings were found in any of the books, and no other damage to interiors at all. One volume has some fraying to the edge of the cloth of the front, and some of the volumes have lesser or greater degrees of rubbing, scuffing, dustsoiling, but all told clean beyond the toning. This is a really fascinating job. Far different, however than the private practice of law, where you make decisions promptly + move on. Here it's decisions by consensus - if all Departments don't concur, the President resolves the differences. Probably the way it ought to be but makes for painfully slow decision making - except of course where national security considerations dictate a prompt response. / Really impressed with the caliber of the people in gov't. from say the Deputy Ass't Secty. level up. Intelligent, hard-working, motivated, etc. / We work long hours - 8am - 7:30 or 8:00 PM (at least they're long for me). Spent about an hour and a quarter with the President on Tuesday last re Russian grain & maritime agreement with Russians. Pretty heady stuff for a lawyer from Houston, Texas. I really already miss things at home. Maybe that will ease when the family moves up on the 9th. St. David's Episcopal is only about 3 blocks from the house we've rented. Average age of congregation seems way up there. Sort of sad. Got away this weekend - to Clayton, N.Y. for a day and a half (where Mary Stuart 's family spends the summer). Nice time with Jamie, my 20 year old who was there. Sort of coming back into the fold, it seems. Back today for the IMF and World Bank meeting here.
