Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Being a Vindication of the Manifesto of the Christian Evidence Society, Against the Assaults of the Christian Instruction Society; 'Prisoner in Oakham Jail for the conscientious maintenance of the truths contained in that Manifesto.' 'Thou hast in this Pamphlet all the sufficient evidence, that can be adduced for any piece of history a thousand years old, or to prove an error of a thousand years standing, that such a person as Jesus Christ never existed; but that the earliest Christians meant the words to be nothing more than a personification of the principle of reason, of goodness, or that principle, be it what it may, which may most benefit mankind in the passage through life.

In den Warenkorb2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Eighteen lines closely and neatly written, headed 'To the Council of Bath College'. An approving testimonial: 'The Revd. Robert Hutchison, who is a candidate for the Head mastership of Bath College, was my pupil during his residence as an Undergraduate at Exeter College Oxford, and I have much pleasure in certifying to the high charater he bore for industry and good behaviour during that period. He was Scholar of the College, and his scholarship was good and sound, as he proved by getting a First Class in Moderations. As I was one of the examiners on that occasion, I can add that his position in that class was decidedly a good one.'.

rigide. Zustand: Bon.

Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). Two very scarce volumes in one, pairing the first edition of Robert Taylor"s radical Syntagma with John Pye Smith"s orthodox rebuttal. In a half morocco binding with marbled paper boards. Two volumes bound as one. Comprising the second edition of John Pye Smith's An Answer to a Printed Paper Entitled "Manifesto of the Christian Evidence Society" (1830), together with the first edition of Robert Taylor's Syntagma of the Evidences of the Christian Religion (1828). Taylor's Syntagma, published by the radical bookseller Richard Carlile while Taylor was imprisoned in Oakham Gaol, sought to undermine the historical foundations of Christianity and argued that many Christian doctrines derived from earlier religious traditions, while John Pye Smith's reply vigorously defended orthodox Christianity and attacked Taylor's methods and conclusions. Robert Taylor (1784-1844), known as the "Devil's Chaplain", was a radical freethinker, lecturer, and radical whose prosecutions for blasphemy made him one of the most notorious religious controversialists of the era. John Pye Smith (1774-1851) was a Congregational theologian, principal of Homerton College, and leading Nonconformist intellectual. In a half morocco binding with marbled paper boards.Externally, generally smart. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in slight loss to morocco. Spine faded. Small ink annotation to front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the odd light spot; one or two minor handling marks to fore edge. One or two creases and closed tears to fore edge of first few leaves. One or two pencil inscriptions from previous owner. Very Good. book.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Lot of 36 titles from the Arno / New York Times Series The American Negro, His History and his literature. All told, the volumes are clean and well kept. From the home of a well regarded historian of Black studies. Also was a tobacco smoker, and that combined with age has led to occasional toning / darkening of the tan cloth part of these hardcover volumes - though without any consistency, it is present to some degree on nearly all. Faint odor as well, especially for those of sensitive nose, though to this seller it is not egregious. Besides that, the condition is pretty solid on all. Binding are all quite strong, sturdy, tight , square. No markings were found in any of the books, and no other damage to interiors at all. One volume has some fraying to the edge of the cloth of the front, and some of the volumes have lesser or greater degrees of rubbing, scuffing, dustsoiling, but all told clean beyond the toning. Uncommon to find so many in one place. Shipping will be extra ! pickup available in NYC. TItles are: Men of Mark: Eminent, Progressive and Rising Rev. William J.
