An extremely successful poet, he could indeed be considered a forerunner to the romantic movement of 18th century. In later life, after being institutionalised for insanity, Cowper found emotional and creative refuge in the Evangelical Church, giving him the inspiration to write hymns. He is also known for writing numerous anti-slavery poems, and his work was often quoted by Dr Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement of the 20th century.
