A series of instructional and moral stories, verses, and catechism for children. Full page inscription on the the front free endpaper from a mother to her daughter (top of leaf is clipped). The daughter's name appears to be Harriet A. Littell, and although the date in the inscription is not entirely legible, appears to be 1843. The name is also written on the rear free endpaper: Harriet A. Littell / Her Book / Present from Mrs. _. Religion, Christianity, Children, Moral Tales. Studio.

A good hardback in original Publisher's binding - burgundy leather spine and corners with gilt decoration, rules and titles. With red cloth over boards with gilt title and roundel to front cover. The covers with some rubbing, bumping and wear. Outer joints are rubbed, but all soundly bound. Text is bright and clean throughout, with clean and attractive plates. Burgundy endpapers with some rubbing. With gilt top edge to text block. A very usable copy of this substantial and comprehensive work. Text in English. xxx + 651pp + Numerous illustrations and Plates (some with tissue guards). Dimensions: approximately 295mm high x 248mm wide x 72mm. Approximate weight 3.5kg (unpacked).

Marks is described as a Clergyman of the Church of England, formerly a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy. 16mo., 24pp., small 2-1/2 x 1-1/2 inch vignette of swirling ship in ocean storm on front, sewn binding but most all thread is gone. Fair, toned and foxed but legible,several corners bumped, disbound but complete.
