Endpapers have 2-tone blue prints of tree of knowledge with a boy and girl reading books. One blank flyleaf has been torn out. Several black and white plates accompany the stories.

James Glass Bertram (1824-1892) is perhaps better remembered for writing The order of the Rod - a classic of Victorian erotica. He generally wrote under a pseudonym.
