Written in an informative and easy to read style this book covers aspects of Chinese history and culture as well as addressing contemporary problems of opium use. At the end of each chapter are questions framed with the aim of getting the student to understand more deeply what he or she has read. For instance the 23 questions included at the end of Chapter III have clearly stated: "Aim: To Recognise Underneath the Strangeness of Chinese Life The Element of Common Humanity, with its Capacities and Needs for the Gospel." This edition includes a supplementary chapter upon the work of the Church Missionary Society. Often reprinted this book must have influenced a large number of people in the China field.
