In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. Published in London in 1809, this is the second edition of this theological work from Rev William Dodd. William Dodd (1729-1777) was an English Anglican clergyman and a man of letters. He lived extravagantly, and dabbled in forgery in an effort to clear his debts, and was caught and convicted. Despite a public campaign for a Royal pardon, in which he received the assistance of Samuel Johnson, he was hanged at Tyburn for forgery. The books are bound in old full leather bindings, 8.5 inches tall approx. The leather bindings have some general rubbing wear and marks, a noticeable bump to lower corner of rear board of volume three, minor cracking to joints, all boards well attached, internally some cockling to paper to a few pages else contents generally nice and clean. This is a heavier item, overseas shipping costs will be slightly higher than the basic standard one kilo quote.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: see description for condition. Dodd Stothard (illustrator). 1st Edition. Bound in leather spine with marbled boards. blank endpaper+f/piece +t.p.+i-iv(Roman)+5-466 (Arabic)+(6, Index & instructions to binder)+(2, list of subscribers)+blank endpaper, 42 engr.plates (inc.f/piece) as called for, all collated as present, of these 26 are by Dodd, 8 by Stothard and 8 unsigned. Internally very good, one plate has a chipped outer edge not affecting image, top outer corner leaf 441/2 creased v.sl.affecting text (this appears to be result of binding leaving wrinkling), about half a dozen minor marginal tears now repaired with transparent archive-standard tear-repair tape; no provenance marks or other text markings, rear free endpaper facing pastedown has an ancient brown ink financial calculation of about 10 ll. and two equally ancient and very fragmentary sm.numbers, rear endpaper has what apepars to be a dealer's small price code in eraseable pencil (however the ABA I note recommends us to leave such things in place!), fr.free endpaper also has v.small & v.early brown ink date (?); no browning bar two sm. facing patches on rear pastedown & endpaper which look more like a splash stain, finally we are bound to note the presence of a most microscopic wormhole at the bottom inner corner from p.384 to end, sl.affecting pastedown and a similar in top outer corner through to p.25 (thus affecting first 4 plates) but these are, genuinely, so small that they can be ignored for rating purposes. The covers are reasonably tight but worn, stringing exposed down fr.joint, bottom sp.chipped exposing tips of gatherings, leather lost along half of top of one panel-ridge, back joint also rubbed but far less seriously; all edges and board surfaces rubbed & grubby, with c.2.5 x 2 cm. surface loss top fr.inner corner, 3 of the 4 orig .unusually small leather corner coverings have virtually disappeared. Red & gilt sp.label however has only a sm.corner chip. The leather sp. extends only 1 cm.onto cover boards. Some descriptions give 40 plates, but this appears to be due to failure to notice that 2 entries in numbered binder's list at end refer to two plates. Despite the binding condition the volume remains structurally sound and internally clean. The 1780 publication date is noted in pencil by a prev.owner at bottom of t.p. thus: [BM cat: 1780?] and this appears to be the general consensus. The full title occupies almost the entire t.p. In many respects a grand exercise in ardent Protestant anti-Catholicism, with the majority of the text dealing with Reformation and subsequent periods, and 'Papists' enumerated on t.p. as among persecutors of Christians.Allow for additional shipping especially outside the UK.

In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). A charming calf-bound Cooke's edition of Rev. William Dodd's moral tale, a reflection of the 18th-century "conduct novel". Cooke's edition. Two volumes in one.Undated, dated from a copy held at the British Library. In a contemporary speckled calf binding.Embellished with two engraved plates. The Sisters is a novel, first published in 1754, often described as a "bad-sister-damned/good-sister-saved" plot. Written by Reverend Dr. William Dodd, this moralising tale highlights themes of virtue and temptation and serves as a notable example of the didactic genre common with the period.Dodd, nicknamed the Macaroni Parson, was a Church of England clergyman who was ultimately executed for forgery in 1777.ODNB damningly describes The Sisters as "a novel whose dullness at least conceals its limp eroticism". It seems he found most success in his writing endeavours with The Beauties of Shakspeare (1752), a collection of quotations which stayed in print well into the twentieth century. In a contemporary speckled calf binding, with gilt to the spine and red morocco spine label. Externally, generally smart, with moderate rubbing to extremities, most notable to the bottom corner of the rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with light spots to the margins. Very Good. book.
