Dodd's 'Beauties of Shakspeare' is an 18th-century anthology of excerpts from William Shakespeare's plays, compiled by the English clergyman and writer William Dodd. Originally published in 1752, the work was a popular collection intended to make Shakespeare's most notable passages and quotations more accessible to the public. Illustrations by Sir John Gilbert, Birket Foster and others. 1879 Cover worn with bumping to spine edges and corners of boards. Back hinge beginning to break. Former owner's name in ink on front free endpaper. Pages foxed with occasional small marks but otherwise in clean sound condition.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Published in London in 1809, this is the second edition of this theological work from Rev William Dodd. William Dodd (1729-1777) was an English Anglican clergyman and a man of letters. He lived extravagantly, and dabbled in forgery in an effort to clear his debts, and was caught and convicted. Despite a public campaign for a Royal pardon, in which he received the assistance of Samuel Johnson, he was hanged at Tyburn for forgery. The books are bound in old full leather bindings, 8.5 inches tall approx. The leather bindings have some general rubbing wear and marks, a noticeable bump to lower corner of rear board of volume three, minor cracking to joints, all boards well attached, internally some cockling to paper to a few pages else contents generally nice and clean. This is a heavier item, overseas shipping costs will be slightly higher than the basic standard one kilo quote.

William Dodd, during his time in prison prior to his execution. Dodd was imprisoned on the charge of forgery, and was hanged at Tyburn in 1777. This particular work features his reflections on the judicial and prison systems of the 18th century. In addition to this volume features Dodd's last prayer, written that before his death, and a selection of his other miscellaneous works. In a full tree calf binding. Externally sound, with heavy rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and also to the extremities. Surface cracks to the spine. Heavy rubbing to the rear joint, with a large crack to the front joint. Light offsetting to both the front and rear pastedown and endpapers. The front hinge is very lightly strained. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd ink spot throughout. Very Good. book.
