A very nice modern binding in style, in slipcase, of this first edition, with all 32 plates present and in very good condition, plus the folding map of Cambridgeshire. The title page has been handwritten and pages 291 to 294 of the main text are missing, also the general index pages wh…ich are often missing in this title. The existing pages are therefore [6], 1-290. The pages edges are untrimmed and overall the pages are very clean and fresh. Some of the plates have slight darkening right at the edge and the occasional fox mark, but never heavy and always in the margins. One plate is coloured, as called for.

Illustrated throughout with thirty-three plates (collated, complete), including a coloured plate and a double-page map of the county. Magna Britannia, being a concise…topographical account of the several counties of Great Britain (to give its full title) was an ambitious topographical and historical survey published by the antiquarians Daniel Lysons and his brother Samuel Lysons in several volumes between 1806 and 1822. It covers the counties of Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, Cornwall, Cumberland, Derbyshire, and Devon. The work was curtailed in 1819 on Samuel Lysons' death. Unlike other similar works published in the 17th and 18th centuries, Magna Britannia remains of value today because the Lysons brothers included content on topics such as population, manufacture and commerce. They were also far less preoccupied than many antiquarians with coats of arms and pedigrees, and did not overstate the grandeur of the counties, as local topographers were apt to do. One volumes of ten only (the complete set can fetch up to 4,500). Bookplate of William Smith Hesleden to the front pastedown. Rebacked in calf with original tree calf boards preserved. Externally, generally smart, though with some rubbing, wear to the extremities and marks to the original boards. Internally, firmly bound. '. At this time he began work for his Environs of London (4 vols., 17926), a topographical account of the parishes within 12 miles of London. A contemporary recounted that Lysons 'spent seven hours up to his knees in water in the vaults of Stepney Church copying epitaphs' (Fleming, 49) and he extended this industry and meticulousness to all his work. He treats Surrey parishes in the first volume, which includes notable demographic sections compiled from primary sources. This volume was only partly superseded by The History and Antiquities of Surrey of Owen Manning and William Bray (3 vols., 180414). The second and third volumes cover Middlesex parishes and are a great advance on previous works. The sections on Essex parishes draw quite heavily on The History and Antiquities of the County of Essex (2 vols., 17628) of Philip Morant but their range is greater, covering births and baptisms and agriculture. The work was supplemented by A Historical Account of those Parishes in Middlesex not Described in the 'Environs' (1800), and in 1811 by a second edition of and a supplement to the Environs. Many of the illustrations were drawn and etched by Lysons and his brother Samuel and the whole represented a very considerable antiquarian achievement .' US$668.
