The English Historical Review is the oldest surviving English language journal, designed to document and discuss history, in particular British history. Early examples of this quarterly publication, first established in 1886. Each volume contains a collection of essay by various authors, edited by Rev Mandell Creighton. Creighton was a Bishop as well as a British historian. The first edition of reighton was editor of 'The English Historical Review', he held the role up until 1891, when it was taken over by Samuel Rawson Gardiner.
