Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition; First Printing. Brown publisher's cloth covered covers with blind stamped margins on front and rear boards and gold stamped title on front board. The covers are worn and scuffed and the cloth on the spine has an inch and half vertical split on the tail of the front joint. There is some loss of cloth on the fore corners of the covers. The contents are complete and original, including the end pages. The sewn text block is still tight, but the book has been read. There is a bit of browning and foxing throughout the book, especially on the end papers. Despite the stated flaws, this is a decent copy of a hard to find original edition. ; Preface written by Rev, Chase and two pages of testimonials at end of book. A nineteenth century narrative written by Chase about his experiences in the New York State Asylum in Utica New York. Chase was a minister in eastern New York State (Columbia County) who suffered from mental illness and was committed to the "Insane Asylum" in Utica. Chase gives an unfliching account of how patients were treated and of the abuses suffered by the mentally ill at that time. Unlike many personal accounts of this time, names are not blocked out with a dash (--) or by using just one letter of the person's name. Chase identifies everyone good or bad connected with his commitment and his stay in the asylum. This is considered to be one of the first first-hand accounts of what conditions were like in the asylums. ; 16mo 6" x 4 1/8"; 184 pages pages.
