William Bingley (17741823), was naturalist and Church of England clergyman. Bingley was a noted writer on botany, topography, and popular zoology. His travels in Wales while still an undergraduate formed the basis of his two-volume, illustrated, Tour of North Wales (1800; 2nd edn, 1814), which includes a catalogue of Welsh plants. He returned to Wales in 1801 and afterwards issued a topographical account, North Wales (2 vols., 1804) (ODNB). An interesting account of North Wales, including some remarkable advice against wearing boots to climb Snowdon, information on the Welsh habit of cleaning teeth with a green hazel and a woolen cloth, etc. "In this work the language, manners, and botany are particularly well-described" (Lowndes). Bindings good with a some rubbing to edges, several cracks to joints inconspicuously repaired and all boards firmly attached, light chipping to the heads of the spines and corners worn and bumped. Contents very good, clean and tight. Frontispiece to vol. 1 a little creased with several expert paper repairs to the underside. [Provenance: with the armorial bookplate and signature of Henry Birkbeck to the front end paper: Norfolk family of High House estate at West Acre, Norfolk, with Grade I listed house built in 1756.] A good to very good set of the second edition.
