Hard Cover. Zustand: Very Good binding. A printing of 15 letters, originally published in the Christian Mirror, by Rufus William Bailey, the agent for the state of Virginia of the American Colonization Society. The organization was beset by controversy from the time of its founding in 1817. Its primary objective was the repatriation of negroes to the colony (and later, the nation) of Liberia. Black Americans protested, stating at a meeting in New York in the 1820's, "we claim this country, the place of our birth, and not Africa, as our mother country, and all attempts to send us to Africa we consider gratuitous and uncalled for." Bailey was in fact one of the most effective of the ACS's agents. He actually persuaded a significant number of free black people to emigrate (especially in the chilly political atmosphere following Nat Turner's slave rebellion). As well he successfully lobbied the Virginia legislature for a subsidy to reduce the cost for those considering emigration. While some believed that Bailey and the ACS's ultimate goal was the eradication of slavery, many black people in this country must have wondered, "With friends like these, who needs enemies?"~~Previous owner's name. Green embossed cloth binding with gilt lettering. Moderate wear to boards with some dampstaining and foxing, but a more than serviceable copy. Uncommon in the trade. Very Good binding.

In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). A smart three volume set of the Colloquies of Erasmus, a collection of dialogues or skits on a wide variety of subjects. Complete in three volumes. With a portrait frontispiece to volume one. Erasmus' Colloquies are a collection of dialogues or skits on a wide variety of subjects which began in the late 1490s as informal Latin exercises for his own pupils. The first official version, of 1518, was described as "a collection of formulae and conversational passages." Notable for its insightful commentary on various aspects of human life and society, the work showcases Erasmus' wit and humor. With sections addressing topics such as manners, education, and theological debates, often through sparkling exchanges between different characters. Written by Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus, commonly known in English as Erasmus, a Dutch Christian humanist, Catholic priest and theologian, educationalist, satirist, and philosopher. He is considered one of the most influential thinkers of the Northern Renaissance. Translated by Nathan Bailey, an English philologist and lexicographer. Edited with notes from Rev. E. Johnson. Publisher's catalogue to the rear of volume one. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. The odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting and age toning to the endpapers. A contemporary ink inscription to the half-title with a contemporary ink stamp to the front endpaper. Very Good. book.

ALS (w. 7.5 in. x h. 9 in.), 3 pages. ALS from a Loyalist, William Clark, to an Anglican clergyman in Nova Scotia. It laments the hardships of Loyalists in America, praises the fidelity of the Anglican clergy, and expresses faith that the rebellion will soon collapse and British monarchy be restored. It also references other Loyalist figures (Weeks, Patten, Jeffries) and includes naval news. In Good condition overall with moderate age toning, scattered mild foxing (primarily to margins and page edges), and minor damp-staining to upper right corner. RW Consignment. Shelved at Rockville Room A Ephemera. Page 1 Rev. & Dear Sir, After I had wrote my letter of Nov'r 1st in answer to yours of Aug't 12th (which will probably accompany this), I was told that it was not likely there wd. be an opportunity to Halifax till the Spring, but as I am certified of an opportunity now presenting, I will trouble you w'th another Letter, to let you know how much I am at your service, and that I have a feeling sympathizing heart for my distressed Brethren in America, wishing most ardently that it was in my power to contribute anything to alleviate yours & others' sufferings, and to reward that merit which most of our Clergy (thank God) are justly entitled to. But whatever Neglects we must here let us remember that our Reward is on high, and let this animate us to Fidelity & Faithfulness, and Perseverance therein under every Temptation, & thro' every Trial. We have had Sir, a long gloomy Day of Sufferings, but for my part, I cannot but think (what I sincerely hope) that the worst is past. I think I can discern some Vestiges or Symptoms of some fortunate Events for this Nation, & some convincing tokens of Causes which will re-establish the British Monarchy, & revive the Lustre of the British Government. In a word, I think the Day is approaching & to my naked Eye, it don't appear to be distant when Rebellion will fall like Lightning from Heaven. The Parliament, Sir, is lately convened. The- Page 2 The first opening of it, seems to be something ominous to the patriotic Faction; a Noble Lord, & one of the chief speakers on the side of opposition, in the House of Peers, suddenly departed this Life, at scarcely an Hour's warning, two Days after the Parliament met. Mr. Ch. J. Fox (whose oratorical abilities are well known) was wounded in a duel, & came near as I did learn to lose his Life about the same time. These Events, together with the failure of all the Prophecies in the republican Papers - the Disasters of D'Estaing in his Fleets being wrecked & dispersed in a storm - The safety of the W. India Islands, particularly Jamaica (which was long ago announced to be taken) - The inefficiency of the Spanish operations against Gibraltar - the great sickness & mortality which has carried off Thousands in the Camp of the Spaniards - the dissension between the Spaniards & French Admirals - the brave conduct of Sir Charles Hardy in maintaining the Sovereignty of the Channel, & even riding triumphantly before Brest, in spite of the Navy of France & Spain united - the Feuds & Animosities prevailing among the Rebels of America, which betoken the Decline of their short lived Empire, &c. These things Sir, I say, have greatly chagrined the Members of Opposition, & have sunkly abated the matter whereupon they used to display their Eloquence in the Senate. You will excuse my enlarging here, for having wrote you once before, I did not intend a long Letter when I sat down, but wd. only set you an Example (if it may be allowed, I who am professedly your Senior)- Page 3 -to do as I have done, to miss no opportunity of writing to me, which will afford much pleasure, for I have few Correspondents these Days in America. Present my respectfull compliments to Mr. Weeks, - he may depend upon it, I shall not trouble him w'th writing to him; I wd. not have it too well known that I wrote to so many, which I seldom have. I cannot think Mr. Th- & his Party will be so unwise as to crea. Signed.
