Contemporary half vellum over pastepaper boards, gilt lettering piece at spine; edges daubed in red and blue. Light wear at extremities. Occasional mild foxing (mostly marginal and largely confined to a few of the final leaves), else a… nearly fine copy with crisp text and clean plates throughout. Set of illustrated descriptive catalogues of the magnificent collection of cameos and engraved gems assembled by the Nuremberg banker and art collector, Johann Martin von Ebermayer (1664-1743). The engraved gems depict famous figures from antiquity to modern times. The main work is divided into seven parts: Gods; Heroes; Kings and Illustrious Romans; Roman Emperors and Nobles; Kings and Illustrious Foreigners (including Greeks); Philosophers, Orators and Poets; Miscellany; Egyptian and Abraxas Images. Three shorter works which follow may be viewed as supplements to the main work: Kings of France; Emperors from Julius Caesar to Charles VI; Dukes of Venice. The final work opens by highlighting twenty-five especially large and intricate engraved cameos, often depicting historical or mythological themes, each followed by very detailed descriptions. "These are exquisitely engraved but the richness of detail suggests that much of it was supplied by artist & engraver to make more impressive what may have been a rather plain gem. Above each of the enlarged depictions appears a plain, or semetimes elaborately jeweled mount in which the gem was set; these appear to be actual size and in the center give the name of gem material" (Sinkankas). The remaining eight plates in the Thesaurus contain 140 smaller images. The two larger works which bracket this collection note the type of gem material beside the engraved images: e.g., Sarda; Chalcedonius; Achates; Achates Niger; Sardonyx; Chrysolithus; Jaspis; Smaragdus.
