Here he recalls his early missions--perilous daytime raids, being shot down, bailing out, forced landings, the deaths of his comrades. These wer the desperate months when the formidable Soviet bomber force suffered catastrophic losses in daylight raids without fighter escort. Later in the war, he took part in long-range nighttime operations, often in near-impossible weather conditions and always at the mercy of German flak and fighter attack.
