(?) chacun des thèmes abordés dans les parties centrales du livre (II à VI) aurait pu faire l?objet d?un colloque et d?un livre séparés. (?) On veut montrer qu?une archéologique de l?esprit? est possible, selon la formule proposée par C. Renfrew, et que ses démarches peuvent être tenues pour scientifiques dès lors qu?elle accepte de soumettre ses hypothèses à la ?testabilité? dont James Bell se fait ici l?ardent défenseur. Ce double objectif est parfaitement légitime; toutefois, il me semble être à l?origine d?une certaine ambivalence dans les définitions de l?archéologie cognitive proposée tour à tour par les différents auteurs. (?) Ce livre est important à la fois par la hauteur des visées assignées à la recherche archéologique et par l?honnêteté des études de faisabilité qui accompagnent le propos.?
