La narrativa de René Marqués es un análisis pormenorizado y exhaustivo de la obra narrativa de este autor (1919-1979), una de las figuras más destacadas de las letras puertorriqueñas en nuestro siglo. Aparte de su talento como dramaturgo, Marqués contribuyó decisivamente a la renovación del relato en la isla y ocupa un lugar central dentro de la «generación del 40». En el libro se estudian, por un lado, sus dos novelas, La víspera del hombre y La mirada, y por otro, los cuentos, agrupados en tres colecciones: Otro día nuestro, En una ciudad llamada San Juan e Inmersos en el silencio. En el examen de este conjunto se aplican los nuevos métodos de la crítica literaria: la autora profundiza en los elementos que configuran el mundo de la historia (contenidos, tiempo, espacio, personajes y lógica de las acciones) y a continuación considera detenidamente las técnicas del discurso, subrayando la importancia que en Marqués adquiere el traramiento del tiempo. Nació en Logroño (España) y cursó estudios de Filosofía y Letras en la Universidad de Navarra. Posteriormente se doctoró en Filología hispánica por la Universidad de Sevilla. Más tarde ha llevado a cabo diversas investigaciones sobre Literatura Hispanoamericana que abarcan tanto la época colonial como los autores y escuelas más recientes, aunque su atención se ha centrado sobre todo en la Literatura Puertorriqueña contemporánea. Entre sus publicaciones figuran estudios sobre Francisco de Jerez, la lírica del Barroco, Mutis, Mújica Laínez y García Márquez.
