Si René Gimpel était plutôt porté sur les grands maîtres français du XVIIIe siècle, notamment Chardin, il comprit avant bien d'autres que la découverte de Cézanne allait changer radicalement la peinture du XXe siècle. Personnage haut en couleurs, animé d'un esprit de révolte du fait de ses racines alsaciennes, il s'enrôla dans la résistance, fut interné par Vichy et déporté à Neuengamme où il mourut en janvier 1945, ayant préparé ses codétenus à la Libération en leur enseignant l'anglais à travers des promenades virtuelles dans les grands musées du monde. Très bon état.

Grand marchad d'art et collectionneur, Réné Gimpel (1881-1945) entre dans la résistance avec ses fils après la défaite de 1940. Dénoncé par un confrère, Jean-François Lefranc, il est emprisonné à Lyon, puis au camp de Royallieu d'où il est déporté en juillet 1944 au camp de concentration de Neuengamme, en Allemagne. Il y meurt en janvier 1945. E.O.

Gimpel's edited diary is "not only an authoritative almanac of the international art market from 1918 to 1939, but something more valuable: a vivid chronicle of life at the cultural top.There are descriptions of Clemenceau, of the Prince of Wales, of Proust's funeral, of Woodrow Wilson and Charles Lindbergh that are as lively as anything in Plutarch.".
