René Beauclair's "New Ideas for Modern Jewelry" is a historical work from 1900 that contains 24 plates with sketches and designs. The ideas are not current, but represent the Art Nouveau spirit of the time and offer insight into historical jewelry trends that can serve as inspiration. The volume was published in collaboration with other artists and is a valuable resource for historical jewelry research. A rare collection of full colour plates issued at the height of the Art Nouveau movement in Paris, one of the movement's central hubs. Each part consists of the original printed front wrapper, plain rear wrapper, title page, single page introduction (authored by Beauclair and dated May 1900), single page list of plates and 16 full colour numbered plates. In total, two pairs of wrappers, two title pages, two introduction pages, two lists of plates and 32 numbered plates printed in full colour. Each plate includes four repeat pattern designs in classic Art Nouveau styles, many based around stylised floral motifs. French painter and designer Rene Beauclair was strongly associated with the Art Nouveau movement. This collection of designs was intended as an inspiration for wallpaper and fabric designs as well as appliqués for materials such as ceramics, jewellery and glass. This is a rare publication with Worldcat locating only three copies in institutional libraries worldwide: The Victoria and Albert Museum, Columbia University and Stanford University. Housed in a portfolio made from the collection's original marble paper covered boards with a new cloth spine and new ties. Around half of the plates and both sets of wrappers have been neatly and professionally reinforced on their versos, mostly along their long edges to close and consolidate small edge tears and barely visible chips. There is a small ink library stamp in the middle of each title page and on the verso of each plate. Otherwise, a rare publication with all plates very clean and in good condition.
