(1st-1850). xxvii+316, all edges gilt; lightly browned endpapers, t.p. detached for bottom 7 cms, foxed and sl.dusty, foxing continues to p.v. and occ. therafter, sometimes more heavily, occ.openings appear sl.dusty, otherwise unmarked, end-gutters good, gilt-dec.leather borders to pastedowns. Tooled black leather covers generally quite sound, clean bar a couple of white smudges to back, extremities rubbed but sp.ends sound, gilt-dec.panel dividers v.sl.rubbed. The scarce later edition of this work in which the author argues that the biblical account is a 'figurative history of spiritual events', not about physical facts, describing the work as 'intended to illustrate a new principle of hermeneutics'.
