Hardcover. Zustand: New. Although the Supreme Court of India decriminalized same-sex relationships in a historic ruling in 2018, societal attitudes remain largely unchanged. One of the reasons cited for this is that religion, which has a pervasive hold on people's mindsets, takes a conservative view of such matters. Two landmark books - I Am Divine, So Are You and Behold, I Make All Things New - attempted to correct that misconception by putting forth perspectives on sexuality from Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Judaism, Islam and Christianity. They recast religion as an ally, not an adversary, of queer emancipation. Taking the series forward, Holy Censorship or Mistranslation? does a close reading of the Bible and some of its key translations, and shows that negative Christian attitudes to sexuality are not rooted in the sacred text but in centuries of tradition. Mistranslations into Greek, Latin and other languages that occurred early, and the serious errors that continue to be made by modern translators, are responsible for the unwarranted controversies. Combining meticulous scholarship with an accessible writing style, this book offers essential insights into a subject that affects millions.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Most people believe that the Bible is hostile to homoerotic relationships. However, this view is influenced by the Church Fathers and medieval interpretations of the Bible. Negative Christian attitudes to sexuality are based on tradition, not on the Bible. Mistranslations into Greek and Latin occurred early, and some fatal translation errors have persisted until the present day. Many current English versions of the Bible continue to mistranslate the relevant texts, including the story of Sodom and Gomorrah and the letters of Paul. This problem is at the heart of the painful controversy about homosexuality, which has rocked Christian churches for decades. Love Lost in Translation invites translators to adopt a fresh approach to the Bible. If this unique, sacred work is translated meticulously, according to strict linguistic and literary criteria, readers will discover that the Old and New Testaments are treasure troves of cultural information, literary sophistication, psychological insight, and spiritual depth. In biblical times, attitudes to close same-sex relationships differed considerably from the general condemnation that became the norm during the Middle Ages. The Bible does not exclude people on the basis of their sexuality. Instead, it urges believers to treat fellow human beings justly, responsibly, respectfully, and generously.…

Zustand: Nuevo.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Between 'Abomination' and 'Zoophilia', 98 other entries complete this amazing dictionary. With meticulous accuracy, Renato Lings focuses on the often-erroneous approaches of different Bible versions to passages assumed to deal with human sexuality and gender. Special attention is paid to the words which over the centuries have become the established 'norm', demonstrating the fallacies brought about by Christian tradition. In addition, this dictionary takes a fresh look at familiar stories, offering intriguing new perspectives. …
