Intrigante legatura "all'olandese" in piena pergamena rigida, con inusuale applicazione di dorso in pelle, a sei nervature, con titoli e fregi in oro. Impressioni arabescate a rilievo agli specchi. All'occhietto "Nova reperta inscriptionum antiquarum". Carte uniformemente brunite. Bella antiporta figurata a motivi allegorici, con ritratto dell'autore in serto, siglata "Johann Jacob de Sandrart Pingebat et sculpebat". Una tavola genealogica a doppia pagina fuori testo. Vignetta calligrafica al frontespizio. Cartigli e capilettera calcografici. Moltissime incisioni epigrafiche, in latino e in greco, nel testo, in cornicette a doppio filo. Edizione originale, pubblicata postuma, di un vastissimo studio epigrafico, concepito come supplemento alle ricerche di Jan Gruter (1560-1627). Ne è autore il medico e filologo tedesco Thomas Reinesius, o Reines (Gotha, 1587-1667): uomo di interessi molto vari, studiò e insegnò medicina e filosofia, fu sindaco di Altenburg ed Elettore di Sassonia. L'antiporta si deve all'incisore Jacob von Sandrart (Frankfurt am Main, 1630-1708), attivo soprattutto a Norimberga. > Bruun / Edmonson, "The Oxford Handbook of Roman Epigraphy", "The "Supplement" to Gruterus, i.e., the "Syntagma Inscriptiones Antiquarum" by Thomas Reinesius was published posthumously in Leipzig in 1682". Malgrado quanto segnalato in ICCU\RMLE\018414, "Variante B: frontespizio in nero senza l'indicazione dell'indice", il nostro esemplare presenta in fine i copiosi indici, ma il frontespizio è impresso in nero. 3400 gr.

1 S. Qu.-kl.-8vo. Gebräunt. 11-zeiliges Dokument in Latein. - Reinesius sprach angeblich schon als Elfjähriger fließend Latein und Griechisch. Während seines Medizinstudiums in Wittenberg, Jena, Frankfurt/Oder, Padua und Basel, wo er promoviert wurde, vertiefte er seine philologischen Kenntnisse. Er wirkte in Hof, Altdorf und Gera, bis er 1627 Leibarzt des sächsischen Kurfürsten und Stadtphysikus in Altenburg wurde. Nicht zuletzt aufgrund seiner Verdienste während der Pestzeit zum Bürgermeister Altenburgs gewählt, lebte er dort bis zu seinem Rückzug aus der medizinischen Praxis 1660. Danach ließ er sich in Leipzig nieder und wurde zum sächsischen Rat ernannt. Die Ergebnisse seiner umfassenden epigraphischen Untersuchungen wurden postum unter dem Titel Syntagma antiquarum inscriptionum" (1682) veröffentlicht.

Engraved frontispiece includs the portrait of author in allegorical frontispiece by Johann Jacob de Sandrart + figures in the text + many foliated initial capitals & head- & tailpieces. Folio vellum with black leather gilt spine label (tips rubbed) fine armorial bookplate with motto Tuum Est. Engraved f rontis + printed title +28pp prelims +1032pp + doublepage genealogical table. The titlepage in black only and title without the additional "cum commentariis absolutissimis et instructissimis indicibus nunc primu`m editum" on the titlepage. This edition thus without the index which seems to go with the red & black titlepage. Precedence unknown but usually the index is the last item typeset as the book has to be printed to allow page numbering so probably the those without index are the earlier state. Some inscriptions in Greek, most in Latin many now lost or indecipherable. A very clean, crisp copy of this indispensable and monumental work. 1 volume. Hardcover.

Seltene erste Ausgabe des Briefwechsels zwischen Thomas Reinesius (1596-1662) und Johann Mathias Nester (166-1679). Thomas Reinesius, "geboren zu Gotha 16. December 1587, sprach bereits im Alter von 11 Jahren fertig Latein und Griechisch, studirte in Wittenberg, Jena, Frankfurt a. O., Padua und Basel, promovirte an letztgenannter Universität, prakticirte in Hof und Altdorf, wurde Professor und Inspector des Gymnasiums zu Gera, darauf Leibmedicus des Kurfürsten zu Sachsen und Bürgermeister in Altenburg, und zog sich schließlich nach Leipzig zurück, wo er als sächsischer Rath am 14 Februar 1667 starb. Reinesius war nach Haller's Urtheil "incredibili eruditione ad miraculum doctus". Pagel, Hirsch IV, p.697 Johann Matthias Nester, "geboren zu Culmbach, studirte von 1640 an in Leipzig und Jena, liess sich 1645 in Schneeberg nieder, wurde 1649 daselbst zum Stadtphysicus ernannt und in demselben Jahre in Jena zum Dr. med. promovirt. Von 1655 war er Leibarzt einer sächsischen Prinzessin und von 1662 an 16 Jahre lang der Markgräfin von Bayreuth. Er zog dann wieder nach Schneeberg, wurde zum kurfürstlichen sächsischen Leibarzt ernannt, starb aber bereits am 31. Jan. 1679." G., Hirsch IV, p.354.
