Neuware - Piano Phase (1967) ist das direkte Resultat meiner Arbeit der Jahre 1965/66 an zwei simultan laufenden Bandgeräten mit identen Tonschleifen, wobei durch kaum merkliche Veränderungen der Bandgeschwindigkeiten behutsame Phasenverschiebungen zwischen zwei gleichen, sich wiederholenden Mustern erz…eugt wurden. Diese Band-Studie führte zu Its's Gonna Rain, Come Out und Melodica. Da der Vorgang fortschreitender Phasenverschiebung eigentlich typisch für Maschinen ist (Scheibenwischer an einem Bus, Signaltöne an einem Eisenbahnübergang usw.), war ich nicht sicher, ob er von zwei Personen dargestellt werden könnte. Über mehrere Monate hinweg haben Art Murphy und ich - indem wir zuerst in Heimarbeit gegen Bandaufzeichnungen unseres eigenen Spiels, dann auf zwei Klavieren gespielt haben - herausgefunden, dass wir zwar nicht über die Perfektion von Maschinen verfügten, wir uns ihnen jedoch einigermaßen annähern konnten und in den Genuss einer völlig neuen und besonders befriedigenden Spielweise kamen, die sowohl vorweg gänzlich ausgearbeitet als auch frei vom tatsächlichen Lesen des Notentextes war, wodurch wir während des Spielens vollständig vom Zuhören vereinnahmt wurden. Das Stück ist in drei Abschnitte geteilt, die durch Wechsel der Noten und Muster gekennzeichnet sind. Der erste besteht aus zwölf Schlägen in natürlichem b-moll, der zweite aus acht Schlägen, die einen scheinbaren Dominantakkord auf E bilden, und der letzte aus vier Schlägen in A (möglicherweise Dur, aber ohne eine klare Terz). Da ich mich intuitiv zu Schlaginstrumenten hingezogen fühle, überdies gelernt habe, alle Tasteninstrumente als außergewöhnliche Sammlung gestimmter Trommeln zu betrachten, und da mein Ensemble eine Gruppe begnadeter Schlagzeuger umfasst, ist es nur natürlich, dass Russ Hartenberger, James Preiss und Robert Becker kürzlich ihr Interesse bekundeten, Piano Phase als Marimba-Duett zu spielen - mit Resultaten, die ich wirklich gerne höre. About the book In the mid-1960s, Steve Reich radically renewed the musical landscape with a back-to-basics sound that came to be called Minimalism. These early works, characterized by a relentless pulse and static harmony, focused single-mindedly on the process of gradual rh…ythmic change. Throughout his career, Reich has continued to reinvigorate the music world, drawing from a wide array of classical, popular, sacred, and non-western idioms. His works reflect the steady evolution of an original musical mind. Writings on Music documents the creative journey of this thoughtful, groundbreaking composer. These 64 short pieces include Reich's 1968 essay "Music as a Gradual Process," widely considered one of the most influential pieces of music theory in the second half of the 20th century. Subsequent essays, articles, and interviews treat Reich's early work with tape and phase shifting, showing its development into more recent work with speech melody and instrumental music. Other essays recount his exposure to non-western music ― African drumming, Balinese gamelan, Hebrew cantillation ― and the influence of these musics as structures and not as sounds. The writings include Reich's reactions to and appreciations of the works of his contemporaries (John Cage, Luciano Berio, Morton Feldman, Gyorgy Ligeti) and older influences (Kurt Weill, Schoenberg).
