De plus, des danses parfaitement chorégraphiées transforment les funérailles en célébrations colorées et énergiques. Depuis plus de vingt ans, Regula Tschumi, titulaire d?un doctorat en ethnologie, étudie et photographie le culte funéraire ghanéen. Ses images étonnantes et aux couleurs vibrantes représentent des cérémonies funéraires chré- tiennes et traditionnelles, des installations bizarres et diverses formes de présentation des défunts, ainsi que les tendances spectaculaires en matière de conception de cercueils figuratifs au cours des deux dernières décennies. Tschumi a également accompagné et photographié l?entrepreneur de pompes funèbres et le porteur de cercueil Benjamin Aidoo (connu sous le nom de « Danseur de cercueil du Ghana »), devenu mondialement célèbre grâce aux médias sociaux. Dans le sud du Ghana, une attention particulière est accordée aux enterrements, notamment chez les Ga. Pour ce groupe ethnique, les funérailles comptent parmi les rites de passage sociaux et spirituels les plus importants. Les cérémonies, qui durent souvent plusieurs jours, sont de grands événements publics conçus non seulement pour honorer les morts, mais aussi pour maintenir la réputation d?une famille et assurer la bonne volonté des futurs ancêtres. Les familles visent à impressionner et à divertir les invités : des salles d?exposition somptueuses, des cercueils uniques et des présentations spectaculaires jouent tous un rôle. Cet accent culturel mis sur le spectacle a stimulé l?innovation en matière de conception de cercueils, de performances et de décor funéraire, faisant des funérailles ghanéennes un mélange unique de rituel, d?art et de fierté communautaire. Le monde de l?art international a d?abord remarqué les cercueils figuratifs du Ghana lors de l?exposition Magiciens de la terre au Centre Pompidou à Paris en 1989. She also examines for the first time those figurative sedans, little-known in western art, but furniture considered the likely forerunners of the figurative coffins.Regula Tschumi's work is based on several years of field research conducted in the region of greater Accra in multiple stages between 2002 and 2012. To learn more about the sedans and coffins, she studied the Ga's culture, religion, forms of artistic expression, history, and burial traditions. The sedans and coffins were studied in the context of an living environment, that environment from which they evolved and where they were once used. Only through this interdisciplinary approach could the author reveal the relationship between the figurative sedans and coffins and interpret their forms of artistic expression.

Über 20 Jahre lang hat die promovierte Ethnologin den Beerdigungskult in Ghana erforscht und fotografiert.
