Two tight and handsome issues of this influential yearly journal of African-American culture and history. In the premiere volume Chester Himes provides the preface ("YARDBIRD READER has thoroughly convinced me that we American blacks are the most inventive, creative and original people in the history of the world") and editor Reed the introduction to this collection of prose and poetry. On the title page of Volume 4, Reed boldly inscribes and signs in black fineline "for Kay / Ishmael Reed" -- "Kay" being Kay Boyle (1902-92), American short story author, novelist, poet and activist. A super pair.

Signed in black ink on front of box by Ishmael Reed who preforms three jazz-poems he called "Hoodoo Songs" on the tapes along with Ortiz Walton. Overall, Very Good condition. Scarce in retail. The Black Box audio poetry magazine ran for more than 10 years, reaching audiences both through circulation and through broadcasts on National Public Radio.
