(xx) + 230pp. Front board missing, rear board loose and cracked at hinge; remaining leather a little rubbed but otherwise fairly well-preserved; spine-label missing (imprint of lettering just visible); previous owner names on title-page (two crossed out); page-edges and first and last few pages browned and rather grubby; internal text fairly clean and everywhere legible; apart from title-page, which is partially split, all pages are securely stitched. Published in Shifnal in Shropshire in 1787, this is the First Edition of this scarce paperback book on Boscobel House and White Ladies Priory in Shropshire, bound in the original printed wrappers, 6.5 inches tall approx., 54 pages, the covers are marked, foxed and darkened, with some creasing, internally foxing to endpapers else contents generally clean. This is a lighter item, shipping costs will be reduced accordingly at checkout where possible.

Zustand: Good. NO DUST JACKET. Some bumps/scuffs/wear at edges and corners of hard board. Marks, scratches, fading to hard board. Tanning/shelf marks to text blocks. Tannin to 1st couple of inner pages. Text good and legible.

One uncolored lithographic map (444 x 469 mm.) folded down to 230 x 132 mm.; edges a bit darkened; removed from Senate Ex. Doc. No. 5, 3d Session, 34th Congress (see upper right-hand corner); very good over all. Lithographically reproduced signature of Rector dated Little Rock, Oct. 28th, 1856. Western-most boundaries show the Choctaw and Cherokee Boundary Lines.

Nineteenth century green leather binding, five raised bands to the spine, gilt details between the bands, all page edges gilt, gilt ruled lines to the perimeters and internal paste downs. 8vo. 7'' x 4½''. Contains 134 + i pages with 58 single-page sharp woodcut illustrations. Emblems include beasts of burden, deer, winged-man, caged bird, palm tree, caged rodents, elephant, and others. Smart bookplate inside belonging to Henry William Hunter Master of Arts with antler motif. Light rubbing to the spine edges and in Very Good clean condition. Member of the P.B.F.A. 1p., 4to. 41 lines of text, written in a close neat hand. Good, on aged paper, laid down on grey paper leaf removed from autograph album. He begins by explaining that an earlier answer was not possible 'while my family were all with me and much sickness in the house and in the parish'. He explains that he is sending 'two or three autographs', and gives a reason for not sending that of 'Mr. Warton', whose handwriting would show 'that he wrote rather more legibly, but not much better than another excellent & learned man, the Bp. of St. Davids'. He now expresses the hope that his correspondent is 'not immediately going to press with the reprint of the Life of Mr. Henry; at least that the intended addition about "popular preacher" is not yet wanted; for it certainly wants to be revised. [.] The passage also about Jan. 30. of which you say very truly, that it is an important document, wants, I fear, both consideration and correction.' He suggests that the recipient call on 'Mrs. James Mainwaring (Sister to my late incomparable friend Mr Bridge)' who will 'shew you the picture of her revered ancestor, the Rector of Malpas'. He now discusses the 'Sermon of the Rector, or heads of a sermon', there being 'a few mistakes in the references, either in your transcript, or in the copy that was before you'. He discusses the sermons of the period, and the '[o]ne thing that amazes' him, 'how Mr. Henry could possibly carry away with him so many distinct topics & texts of Scripture'. The last paragraph concerns 'Bp. Barrow's burial', and the site of his tomb. COPAC records an edition of the 'Life and Death of Philip Henry' printed in Edinburgh by Andrew Jack in 1823.

Rev. Charles Harington [sic] was grandson of Sir John Edward Harington (1760-1831) of Ridlington, 8th Baronet, and the item is from the Harington papers. The full title reads: 'The Rectory, Stoke Lacy | Catalogue of the Valuable and Modern Furniture | Including Iron Bedsteads, Blankets and Quilts, Chests of Drawers, Mahogany and Painted Wardrobes, Dairy & Kitchen Requisites, Bacon, Whitechapel Trap, Saddles, Casks, Hurdles, & numerous Effects,| To be sold by Auction, by Oakley & Son | On Thursday, 24th. September, 1868, | At the Rectory, Stoke Lacy, Four Miles from Bromyard, | By Order of the Administratrix of the Late Rev. Charles Harrington. [sic]' At foot of page: 'The Furniture, &c. is Equal to New, and will be Sold without any Reserve. An early attendance is respectfully solicited, as the Sale will commence punctually at Half-Past Twelve o'Clock. | Catalogues may be had at Oakley's Printing Office, and on application, from the Auctioneers, Bromyard.' Printed on one side of a 56 x 44 cm. piece of wove paper. Laid out in characteristic mid-Victorian style mixing types and point sizes. The lower half of the poster carries the auction catalogue of 218 lots (from '1 Iron pig trough' to '218 Small [Book shelves] abd twi cabe seated chairs') in eight columns, divided into: Yard, Cellar, &c.; Oak Hogsheads; Greenhouse; Brewhouse & Dairy; Scullery; Kitchen; Servants' hall; Entrance Hall; Butler's Pantry; Library; Dressing Room; Attic; Smoke Room. Items are to be found in: Saddle Room & Coach House; Larder & Cook's Pantry; Chamber over Drawing Room; Chamber over Library; Over Butler's Pantry; Chamber over Servants Hall. Annotated on reverse by a member of the Harington family: '24. 9. 68 | Catalogue of sale at Stoke Lacy.' An unusual and excessively scarce item. No copies on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC.

Mostly not dated, but the final one, "An Appeal to the Clergy" is dated 1842, many printed in Honiton by Knight, 48 tracts; Nos 1-23, 34-38, 29-32, 43-58 (British Library only has 1-20), plus three sermons (not in The British Library), brown cloth. Hinges cracked but holding, very rubbed, internally good.
