Jacques Élisée Reclus (* 15. März 1830 in Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, Département Gironde; ? 4. Juli 1905 in Torhout bei Brügge) war ein französischer Geograph und Anarchist. Die Ausbildung begann Élisée Reclus im preußischen Rheinland, setzte sie im protestantischen Kolleg von Montauban fort und beendete sie an der Berliner Universität, wo er an einem Lehrgang in Geographie von Carl Ritter teilnahm. Nachdem Reclus sich in Reaktion auf den Staatsstreich vom 2. Dezember 1851 aus Frankreich zurückgezogen hatte, bereiste er bis 1857 Großbritannien, die USA, Mittelamerika und Kolumbien. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Paris verfasste er zahlreiche Artikel für Revue des deux mondes, Tour du monde und andere Zeitschriften, in denen er die Ergebnisse seiner geographischen Arbeit publizierte. Nach einem kurzen Aufenthalt in Italien ließ sich Reclus in Clarens (Schweiz) nieder, wo er seine literarische Arbeit wieder aufnahm. Nachdem er mit einer Histoire d?une montagne ein Gegenstück zur früheren Geschichte eines Flusses verfasst hatte, schrieb er hier fast alle seine großen Arbeiten, darunter La Nouvelle Géographie universelle, la terre et les hommes, 19 Bände (1875?1894). Dies ist eine umfangreiche Zusammenfassung, die durchgehend mit Landkarten und anderen Abbildungen illustriert ist und 1892 von der Pariser Geographie-Gesellschaft mit einer Goldmedaille ausgezeichnet wurde. Extreme Genauigkeit und überzeugende Darstellung sind die wichtigsten Eigenschaften aller Werke Reclus'; ihnen kommt ein anhaltender wissenschaftlicher und literarischer Wert zu. Interesting and charming letter, almost certainly written to his friend, the anarchist sculptor Émile Derré (1867-1938), addressed as "cher et vénéré sculpteur", announcing a visit in order to model for Derré: "Non, je n'admets pas que vous vous dérangez de votre travail pour venir me voir. Vous n'emportez… pas vos statues avec vous, tandis que moi, je puis emporter mon travail : un crayon, une feuille de papier m'accompagnent en voiture. J'irai donc, Samedi matin, vous serrer la main et me mettre à votre disposition pour les heures de pose". - The letter is probably in connection with Derré's most famous work entitled "Le Chapiteau des baisers", also known as "Rêve pour une maison du peuple", that was initially errected at the Jardin du Luxembourg in 1898 and transferred to Roubaix in 1990. The sculpted capital of a massive column shows Louise Michel, Auguste Blanqui, and Élisée Reclus kissing above the inscription: "Parlez mes douces images, portez l'amour et la tendresse du cur". Darré is also the author of a posthumous bust of Reclus, most likely based on the preparatory drawings for the earlier work, that was exhibited at the Salon of 1906. - With a collector's note in pencil.
