This document explains and evaluates three methods of generating random phase screens: using a Fou…rier series upon a polar frequency grid with logarithmic spacing; using the fast Fourier transform, with its cartesian frequency grid; and using Zernike polynomials. It provides a comparison of the polar Fourier series technique with the two more common techniques (fast Fourier transform and Zernike), with the end result of giving the users enough information to choose which method best ts their needs. The evaluation criteria used are generation time (usability) and phase structure function (accuracy).

The Naval Surface Weapons Center at Dahlgren, Virginia, was the primary site of US naval computing. The center's machine, the Naval Ordnance Resear…ch Calculator (NORC), was built at the Watson Scientific Computing Laboratory under the direction of Wallace Eckert. Rebecca (Becky) Jones, an Associate in Astronomy at Columbia, was Wallace Eckert's assistant for many years and (also with Eckert) specified the first program for the SSEC (the moon orbit calculations that would be used later in the Apollo missions. Old signature inside the front cover, edges rubbed, in very good condition otherwise. A rare computer science work. Size: 6" - 9½". book.
