There were no striking firsthand accounts of life on the plantation, no harrowing descriptions of lashings [.] The eulogium was a philosophical piece. It contained a theory of history and civilization dominated by the idea of progress. It revealed a belief in the power of ideas and a concept of Christian modernism.".
