The author (1809-1902), a doctor, travelled widely as a plant collector, and for a time was Curator of the Fielding Herbarium at Oxford; he contributed to scholarly botanical and medical journals. Prior (1809-1902) was a British botanist, living in South Africa, Canada, USA and Jamaica and finally in London, fellow of the Linnaean Society. He was also the translator of ?Ancient Danish Ballads?
