Engraved title-page and second title-page with vignette, both part of first gathering. Many engraved illustrations, several of which occupy a full page. Bound without final blank. Occasional light spots and smudges but generally clean internally. A curious work on hats and headgear, pseudonymously published by the French Jesuit theologian Theophile Raynaud (1583-1663). The engraved title-page is signed by Romeyn de Hooghe; one folded plate is signed by Cornelis Galle. …

Sobria legatura coeva in piena pergamena rigida, con titoli manoscritti al dorso a cinque nervature. Antiporta figurata, parzialmente staccata, incisa da Romeyn de Hooghe. Vignetta calcografica al frontespizio, raffigurante un lettore di libri con il motto "Optimi consultores mortui". Opera adorna da 27 incisioni nel testo, raffiguranti medaglioni, personaggi ed ornamenti, e tre fuori testo ripiegate, con scene della vita di Cristo. Le tavole sono incise da Cornelius Galle, sempre su disegni di Romeyn de Hooghe. Fresca impressione. Rara edizione di un intrigante studio seicentesco, stampato la prima volta nel 1655, sui cappelli e copricapi laici e religiosi, dotato di un ricco apparato iconografico. Ne è autore, sotto lo pseudonimo di Anselmo Solerio, il teologo gesuita francese Theophile Raynaud (Sospel, presso Nizza, 1583-1663), che fu docente di grammatica e letteratura ad Avignon, ed in seguito di filosofia e di teologia a Lione e a Roma. Some wear on edges. - Rare copy of first Dutch edition, a new French, more free after the text, translation of the controversial treatise against trade by members of the church by Théophile Raynaud (1583-1663). Originally published in 1642 under the name Renato Valle and title : Hipparchus; de religioso negotiatore disceptatio ., first translated into French in 1645. The book was placed on the Index. The frontispiece contains 4 scenes of clergyman trading. The vignette on the title-page has the motto : Hollandia: pia et sapiens hospita (Holland: wise, caring and hospitable). It shows a scene where a wealthy citizen welcomes a poor old man as the first of a whole crowd, sitting in front of the City Hall of Amsterdam, now the Royal Palace at the Dam in Amsterdam. Very slightly toned but clean, short repaired tear to De Toga Romana's folding plate at gutter. Contemporary vellum, title inked to spine, edges sprinkled red. A few marks and smudges, corners very mildly rubbed, a very good copy indeed. Solerius' De Pileo is a curious work on hats and headgear, pseudonymously published by the French Jesuit theologian Théophile Raynaud (1583-1663). Amongst the numerous illustrations, the engraved title-page is signed by Romeyn de Hooghe; one folded plate is signed by Cornelis Galle. This 'new edition' of 1671 followed its original publication in Leiden in 1655. Here, it is found paired with the second edition of Girolamo Bosso's work on Roman secular and clerical togas, which made its first appearance in Pavia in 1614.
