The essays included in the anthology offer a broad luminous spectrum of translation studies. During the last three decades translation studies or translatology has developed into an independent discipline or rich potentials leading to the establishment of full fledged departments in many universities. The history of literary translation in the west is by and large the history of two opposing views freedom versus fidelity what fidelity consists and how much freedom a translator can claim. The more conservative school believes that a translator is a traitor if his translation is not literal while the advocates for freedom hold that in literary translation paradoxically a translator must be a traitor to the letter in order to be loyal to the spirit because they insist the soul is more important than the body. In addition to giving a brilliant exposition to the history theories and problems of translation the essays also assiduously examine translation in practice revealing in the process subtle nuances and complexities involved in the act of translation. Anybody interested in the study of translation will find the book intellectually stimulating and practically useful. 310 pp.…

The contours of individualism in the poetry of Kamala Das/Bhabani S. Baral. Out of evil cometh good. One of the important consequences of colonialism in India is the birth of Indian English literature. The process through which it developed had three distinct stages. In the first stage there was admiration and imitation of the western models. After the first flush was over a reaction set in. That was the second stage the stage of resentment and rebellion. This naturally led to the third stage the one we are passing through the stage of self discovery and self assertion. The writers now draw on the rich cultural heritage of India and at the same time explore its contemporary relevance. A writer of an independent country cannot afford to lose touch with social reality and he must understand transcribe and recreate it in verbal artefact. The task is rendered more difficult because the Indian English writers are obliged to write in a language they are not born into. But the writers have remarkably overcome all these difficulties and looking at the achievements of the Indian English writers it can be definitely claimed that Indian writing in English has come of age and has completely got over the anxiety of influence. The nineteen essays that constitute this volume cover a wide range of authors and subjects. Starting with Nirad C. Chaudhuri one of the greatest thinkers and most controversial writers of the last century the essays shed new lights on different aspects of the makers of Indian English Literature. Since Indian writing in English is prescribed in most of the universities in India both the teachers and the students will find this volume very useful and anybody interested in Indian writing in English will also find these luminous essays intellectually stimulating. 236 pp.…

The fact that literature though culture bound and period based has a universal and timeless appeal implies that there is something in a literary work which for lack of any better term may be called literary universal that transcends time and space across lands and cultures. The speculations of the aestheticians of the west and of India about the locus of literariness or what constitutes literariness though in all probability developed independently have many ideas in common. The book explores the affinities and differences between the western literary theories and the Indian literary theories through a study of the correspondences between Alamkara and the rhetorical school Indian theory of guna and dosa in Kavyasarira and stylistics and the western theory of form Vakrokti and oblique poetry Svabhavokti and statement poetry aucitya and decorum dhvani and suggestion Rasa and pleasure. Indian theory of Sphota and Derrida's theory of Ecriture the idea of imitation in Bharata and Aristotle and concludes that compared with the Indian poetics the western poetics is perfunctory in spite of occasional bright and insightful flashes that we find in Aristotle Coleridge Croce or Mallarme for that matter. 196 pp.…
