Mattison was the Historian of the Region Two Office, National Park Service, Omaha, Nebraska. At the time of this publication, he had contributed about two dozen articles to history magazines,… largely in the midwest and northern plains region. This particular study was the by-product of the historical program which was conducted by the Missouri River Basin Recreation Survey, National Park Service. Originally published in Nebraska History Volume XXXV Number 1 in March 1954, the Nebraska State Historical Society gave permission to the Oregon Trail Museum Association to reprint it. Ray Harold Mattison was born on September 15, 1903 near Belgrade, Nebraska. He attended Wayne State College. After earning a teaching certificate, and a BA in education, Mattison completed an MA in history, and participated in doctorate coursework. Mattison joined the Bureau of Reclamation in 1940, and worked as a tour guide at Boulder Dam. However, Mattison spent the majority of his career in the U.S. National Park Service. He worked in several U.S. National Park Service sites, and also served as a historian in Omaha for the Park Service for fifteen years. Mattison's articles were mostly published in historical journals originating from the Midwest. Then, in 1965, Mattison served as the Superintendent of the State Historical Society of North Dakota. But because of political issues with the governor, Mattison retired to Tucson, Arizona in 1969. Mattison died on October 6, 1980 in Arizona. Frontier garrisons played a significant role in the development of the West even though their military effectiveness has been questioned. The author describes daily life on the posts, which provided protection to the emigrants heading west and kept the roads open. With the building of Fort Randall in 1856, the military occupation of the Upper Missouri was begun. By 1860 two military posts of a permanent character had been established in the present state of Wyoming, one in Nebraska, and one in South Dakota. The end of 1864 found the Northern Plains aflame. At that time the region had twenty-eight military establishments compared to three in 1860. Several other developments made it necessary in the following decade and a half to increase further the number of troops. In some places, particularly in the Dakotas and Montana, additional military posts were built. Additional troops were required as the result of the opening of the Bozeman Trail and the construction of the Union and Northern Pacific railroads. Finally, the relentless campaign against the Indians following the Battle of the Little Bighorn brought new demands for troops and military posts. By 1878, the number of posts and cantonments in the Northern Plains region had increased to thirty-eight. The role of the military posts in the conquest of the Northern Plains is a familiar story. Little, however, has been written about the personnel who comprised the scores of garrisons which dotted the region. In spite of the varied locations of these outposts and the diverse backgrounds of the individuals who inhabited them, the pattern of life in all was strikingly similar. This study is primarily designed to give the reader an insight into the day-by-day life in the frontier posts of the region. Reprint edition. Presumed second printing thus.
