In den WarenkorbZustand: Very Good. NATURE'S UNDERWATER FAIRYLAND-FLORIDA'S UNDERWATER FAIRYLAND. A striking mid-century promotional brochure for Silver Springs, built around its famous glass-bottom boats and the attraction's elaborate underwater geography - the Bridal Chamber, Mammoth Rock Ledge, Devil's Kitchen, Blue Grotto, Turtle Meadow, Garden of Eden, Fisherman's Paradise, and other named features visible through the remarkably clear spring water. Opening to a large pictorial display, the brochure combines photographs, promotional text, tourist information, and the lengthy Legend of the Bridal Chamber, presenting Silver Springs as both natural wonder and carefully constructed roadside spectacle. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: BUILT TO UNFOLD INTO A TOURIST DISPLAY. Single folding promotional sheet, approximately 4 by 9 inches, unfolding to 12 by 18 inches. Printed in green, orange-red, and black with photographs and illustrations. Exterior depicts Silver Springs and its glass-bottom boats above a cutaway underwater landscape. Interior panels illustrate the springs, boats, recreational activities, and attractions, with descriptions of named underwater landmarks. CONDITION: Carefully handled with general light rubbing and age-toning. Original folds remain intact but are tender, particularly at intersections, and should be handled with care. Minor edge wear and small separations associated with the folds. FLORIDA TOURISM SIGNIFICANCE: WHEN THE SPRINGS BECAME A SPECTACLE. Silver Springs was among Florida's foundational tourist attractions, with tourism developing there in the nineteenth century and glass-bottom boat excursions becoming its defining experience. This brochure belongs to the mature pre-Disney roadside-tourism period, when Silver Springs was promoted as an internationally known natural attraction and an entire imaginative geography had been created beneath the boats. THE LEGEND OF THE BRIDAL CHAMBER. More unusually, the brochure devotes substantial space to the legend of Claire Douglass and Bernice Mayo, attributed to Aunt Silla, an African American woman long associated with Silver Springs who reportedly related the story to visitors for many years. The legend transformed one of the deep underwater formations into the Bridal Chamber, giving the glass-bottom boat tour a romantic narrative as well as a visual spectacle. The brochure is particularly useful as a document of how Florida attractions blended landscape, folklore, advertising, photography, and theatrical presentation. Modern scholarship has also examined the changing Bridal Chamber story as an example of how race, class, and gender were incorporated into Florida tourist narratives.
