Tra il 1483 e il 1484 a soli 17 anni Marin Sanuto a seguito dell'Inquisitore di Terraferma partecipò a questo incredibile viaggio a scopo amministrativo che lo portò da Padova all'Istria toccando la Lombardia. Durante il viaggio annotò le sue impressioni che consegnò a Pietro Bembo ma restarono manoscritte (se ne conoscono due redazioni conservate in due codici a Venezia e a Padova) fino al 1847 quando lo storico inglese Rawdon Brown ne curò la presente edizione, facendo riferimento al codice 996 conservato alla Biblioteca di Padova. Contiene disegni a penna del Sanuto che raffigurano i castelli e le fortezze, e un intero capitolo in rima nel quale lo stesso riassumeva quello che sarebbe andato a trascrivere in prosa. A pag. 19 indice delle 60 località descritte poste sotto il dominio della Serenissima.
