The following comments, however, are concerned only with the first part, since a better understanding of the original sources can advance our knowledge of Solon. Our aim must be to find out what an intelligent and informed Greek during the classical period knew and thought of Solon. The contemporary tradition of the sixth century is lost, except for fragments of the poems, and the later tradition represented mainly by Diogenes Laertius and Plutarch evidently goes back to sources of the fourth century. Schriftltr. der Zeitschriften Rheinisches Museum für Philologie (1959-1967) und Gnomon (1970-1999, ab 1975 Mitherausgeber). - Einband lichtrandig, sonst ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Aus dem Text: Die zwei Fragen die ich erörtern möchte, ohne sie beantworten zu können, beziehen sich auf den Ursprung des Epigramms und auf das Verhältnis zwischen Epigramm und zugehörigem Denkmal. Beide Fragen sind archäologisch, historisch, und epigraphisch eher als literarisch, und dieser Abstand von den anderen Themen der Tagung fordert eine kurze Erklärung. Das Epigramm ist eine Aufschrift in metrischer Form, die sowohl von einem Gedicht wie von einer Aufzeichnung verschieden ist. Mit dem Gedicht hat das Epigramm die Form gemeinsam, unterscheidet sich aber von ihm dadurch dass es eine Inschrift ist die eng und einzigartig mit einem Denkmal verbunden ist, um dieses Denkmals willen geschaffen wurde und ein wesentlicher Teil dieses Denkmals ist. Als Inschrift ist ein Epigramm von einer Aufzeichnung nicht verschieden, doch unterscheidet es sich von ihr dadurch, dass die Aufzeichnung ohne direkten Bezug auf das Schreibmaterial steht von dem sie gelöst gedacht werden kann. Die uns bekannten Gesetze, Beschlüsse, und Verträge des Altertums sind uns zwar in den meisten Fällen auf Stein oder Bronze erhalten, sie verlieren aber wenig ihrer Bedeutung wenn sie auf Papyrus oder gar Papier übertragen werden. Die echten Epigramme jedoch, aus welchen Gründen sie immer von ihren Denkmälern gelöst in alten oder neuen Sammlungen geschrieben oder gedruckt erhalten sind, führen ein Schattendasein, auch wenn sie von Meisterdichtern stammen. - Wikipedia: Antony E.
