In 1878 he succeeded General Charles Gordon as Governor of Equatoria, southern Sudan. The Mahdist revolt would cut Equatoria off from the rest of the world from 1883 until 1888 when the relief expedition led by Henry Morton Stanley eventually reconnected with Emin.…
