More than 1.7 million copies have been sold, thanks to its universal message of aging as a natural gift of life. Winner of the American Booksellers Book of the Year Honors Award (1991), and two Benjamin Franklin Awards: for design and content, literature (1988), and for excellence and innovation in marketing, literature (1992), When I Am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple has been applauded for its honest and inspiring approach to the much neglected topic of aging. When I Am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple has created a network of support and encouragement: the sixty-plus men and women whose work is included, the readers who have taken the time to share how the book has touched their lives, and the booksellers who have so graciously recommended it to buyers. Stories and poems such as Warning, Like Mother, Like Daughter, Love at Fifty, Near Places, Far Places, and Dear Paul Newman tell of the endearing moments of joy -- and passion -- to be found in the rich and varied world of midlife and beyond. This award-winning anthology has earned a word-of-mouth popularity because, as the Los Angeles Times said, the time is ripe for such a message. ; Contents: Warning / Jenny Joseph -- Sitty Victory / Vicky Salloum -- Grandma sits down / Rick Kempa -- Aunt Marie at 99 / Tom Benediktsson -- Here, take my words / Karen Brodine -- The trouble was meals / Elizabeth Bennett -- Like mother, like daughter / Susan S. The first edition of Charles Rathbone Low's (1837-1918) illustrated history of the Royal Navy, from its origins under the auspices of the Tudor court to the close of the nineteenth century, including the Battle of Trafalgar with separate colour plates of HMS Victory and Lord Nelson. The work was published in the wake of the fleet review at Spithead, a display of force occasioned by the visit of Kaiser Wilhelm II and Admiral Tirpitz to the United Kingdom in 1889. The same year, Britain adopted the Naval Defence Act and its infamous 'two-power standard', which required the Royal Navy to maintain a fleet of battleships equal in number to the combined strength of the world's next two largest navies. The author of the present work, Charles Low, served in the East India Company navy from 1853 to 1863, attaining the rank of lieutenant. Upon his retirement, he was appointed the first librarian and assistant secretary to the Royal United Services Institute, and later established himself as a writer of naval history and fiction.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition of this surprisingly scarce and important early biography, which covers Roberts's career up to and including the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), where he earned the soubriquet "the Hero of Kandahar". Following the war, Charles Rathbone Low, already Garnet Wolseley's biographer, "saw potential for good sales in Roberts's life. His memoir contains a wealth of useful material, although criticism is not part of it, although Low opposed the 'forward school' of which Roberts was a spokesman. He wrote: [My book] has been compiled from the Blue Books and official despatches, and from personal reminiscences supplied in conversation and by correspondence with Sir Frederick Roberts, who himself revised the entire work, chapter by chapter'" (Atwood, p. 7). Not in Bruce. Rodney Atwood, The Life of Field Marshal Lord Roberts, 2015 Octavo. Mounted Woodburytype frontispiece portrait of Roberts; publisher's 2-page ads and 48-page catalogue at end (dated April 1883). Original red cloth, gilt-lettered spine, two broad gilt rules to spine ends and front cover. Signatures on front free endpaper verso and head of title page of George Sydney Waterlow (1852-1925), a member of the famous family of engravers of currency and postage stamps, with his armorial bookplate; crest bookplate of Thomas Harrison Greene (d. 1963), Foreign Office. Binding refurbished, spine ends and corners consolidated, repairs to inner hinges, internally clean: very good.
