Charles Rathbone Low (1837-1918) was a lieutenant in the Indian Navy and author of popular books on military history and nautical exploration, including Soldiers of the Victorian Age and Maritime Discovery. Somewhat worn and faded at spine, inner hinges reinforced, with considerable rubbing to extremities, overall used, very good minus with clean text. Ownership signature on the front endpaper of Frederick Cornwallis Conybeare (1856Ð1924) a British orientalist, Fellow of University College, Oxford, and Professor of Theology at the University of Oxford.

The first edition of Charles Rathbone Low's (1837-1918) illustrated history of the Royal Navy, from its origins under the auspices of the Tudor court to the close of the nineteenth century, including the Battle of Trafalgar with separate colour plates of HMS Victory and Lord Nelson. The work was published in the wake of the fleet review at Spithead, a display of force occasioned by the visit of Kaiser Wilhelm II and Admiral Tirpitz to the United Kingdom in 1889. The same year, Britain adopted the Naval Defence Act and its infamous 'two-power standard', which required the Royal Navy to maintain a fleet of battleships equal in number to the combined strength of the world's next two largest navies. The author of the present work, Charles Low, served in the East India Company navy from 1853 to 1863, attaining the rank of lieutenant. Upon his retirement, he was appointed the first librarian and assistant secretary to the Royal United Services Institute, and later established himself as a writer of naval history and fiction.

Covers specifically the British naval power in the Near and Middle East from the earliest days of the East India Company until its abolition in 1863. Forms the basis for studies of campaigns and exploration wherever the Bombay Marine operated: in the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, the Arabian Sea, the Laccadives, Maldives and west coast of India, the Andamans, Java and Burma. Of primary importance as a record of the history of the British presence in the Gulf, where the Bombay Marine served as police force, mail carrier, ethnographer, surveyor and, when necessary, strike force for over three centuries - in particular in the period when British relations with the Gulf sheikhdoms were being consolidated. Includes detailed accounts of hydrographic surveys by the Indian Navy, including those in the Gulf. The fourth Sherlock Holmes movie starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, and the second produced at Universal Studios. Preceded by "Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror" (1942), directed by John Rawlins, and followed by "Sherlock Holmes in Washington" (1943), also directed by Roy William Neill (who would go on to direct all subsequent Holmes films at Universal). Watson and Holmes, transplanted from their usual Victorian setting, now in England in the midst of WWII, have to protect Swiss scientist Dr. Franz Tobel and his invention, an advanced bomb site, from falling into the hands Nazi Germany, as well as Holmes' arch-nemesis, Professor Moriarty (Lionel Atwill). With an agency stamp on the verso. A plain secretary works for a womanizing divorce lawyer who only dates married women. To avoid having to deal with the matrimonial pursuits of any of his potential romances, he offers her financial support if she marries him in name only. Set in Paris. 10 x 8 inches. Very Good plus with some faint soil at the margins.

First edition of this surprisingly scarce and important early biography, which covers Roberts's career up to and including the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), where he earned the soubriquet "the Hero of Kandahar". Following the war, Charles Rathbone Low, already Garnet Wolseley's biographer, "saw potential for good sales in Roberts's life. His memoir contains a wealth of useful material, although criticism is not part of it, although Low opposed the 'forward school' of which Roberts was a spokesman. He wrote: [My book] has been compiled from the Blue Books and official despatches, and from personal reminiscences supplied in conversation and by correspondence with Sir Frederick Roberts, who himself revised the entire work, chapter by chapter'" (Atwood, p. 7).
