Les connaissances sur la ville de Paris de la première moitié du XIXe siècle et en particulier de ses classes populaires avaient bien besoin d'être renouvelées. Si Louis Chevalier leur avait consacré un ouvrage majeur en 1958, personne depuis ne s'est attaqué directement au sujet et la " thèse Chevalier " est ainsi reprise par la plupart des historiens depuis cinquante ans. L'objectif de Vivre la ville. Les classes populaires à Paris (1ère moitié du XIXe siècle) consiste à démontrer, contre les idées reçues, que le Paris de cette époque se situe dans la continuité du siècle qui précède et annonce bien le demi siècle qui suit ; que la ville n'était pas victime et malade de son immigration, mais dynamique et capable de l'intégrer ; et finalement que les classes populaires, malgré les contraintes fortes qui pesaient sur elles, n'étaient dans leur très grande majorité ni aliénées ni dangereuses, mais qu'elles ont démontré leur capacité à agir sur leur condition et ont fait preuve d'une capacité de réaction nettement plus importante qu'on ne l'a cru jusqu'à maintenant. À partir de sources inexploitées ou interrogées de façon nouvelle, s'appuyant sur les recherches concernant les villes et les classes populaires, de France et d'ailleurs, les plus récentes, l'ouvrage ne se présente pas sur un mode narratif.
